Bow ties for a job interview: yea, nea, or meh?

Bow ties are for college professors and clowns. If you’re interviewing for any other job, don’t wear one.

No human should ever wear a bowtie. Unless you’re also in a tux.

Damn it. Someone already took my joke.

I say go for it. Part of interviewing is standing out from the other candidates. A bow tie is an inoffensive way to do so.

I agree with this. If it’s down to you and a couple of other dudes who wore the same boring suit, be memorable.

Bow ties may be extraordinary today, but I’ll bet you that in ten years or so, they’ll be considered perfectly normal. You’d be amazed by how many high schoolers wear them nowadays, even when a tie isn’t needed.

I am wearing a bow tie as we [del]speak[/del] type, but I would not wear it to an interview of any type.

I only acquired the bow tie because I went out shopping for dress pants, bought two pairs, and spotted a display of bow ties and bought one on impulse. When I got home, I modeled my new outfit for the family.

My daughter looked at me, shook her head, and said to my wife “See what happens when we let daddy go shopping by himself?”

Shodan

I’ve never known anybody IRL who could wear a bow tie and not look like a Poindexter. You might be that guy who can carry it off. A job interview, especially if you actually need the job, doesn’t strike me as the place to try one out.

As a bow tie guy, I wear long ties to job interviews. My only exception is when I’m interviewing for a teaching position, a la the “60-year-old PhD” exception above.

Well, librarians are a very dweebish bunch, so it’s not like you would really stand out.

Definitely don’t. It could work in your favor, or it could backfire. Just wear a normal suit and you have no chance of your clothes impacting your interview negatively.

I think being memorable with your personality is much more effective than being memorable with your dress.

And doctors. My sons’ doctor wears one because babies grab a regular tie, and because in general they spread disease.

Poll doesn’t make sense. Ask the question if bow ties are a bad idea. 3 of the responses are qualifies “no”, which I would assume would mean that it is not a bad idea. And the fourth response says that bow ties are cool.

Shouldn’t there be a “yes, they are a bad idea for an interview”? I would have voted that way if it were an option.

I’ve seen librarians get hired wearing goddamned sweater sets and knit pants to the interviews these days. I think it’s fine.

 Huh?

Poindexter doesn’t wear a bow tie. He wears a mortarboard and a white lab coat with a red pushbutton switch covering his sternum.

From urban dictionary:
Poindexter- one who looks and acts like a nerd but does not posses the supernatural intelligence of a nerd.

After reading the OP, and seeing the job is for a librarian, I change my vote to YES.

I wouldn’t wear one…unless you’re a flamboyant southern homosexual gentleman, and/or Timelord. Then you might pull it off.

Neckties suck, all of them.

Doesn’t matter what kind, bow, standard, ascot, bolo, I hate them all

What are you, Jimmy Olsen?

No bow ties.
And no string ties, either, while we’re on the subject.
