"Boy dates girl on bet, falls in love, girl finds out, ends happily" 1st appearance?

You know the story…

A guys dates a girl on a bet. He unexpectedly falls in love with her. Great. But then. Oh no. She finds out it was a bet. The lovers part with angry words. But they are reunited and she sees his love is true. Cue sunset.

Sometimes the girl dates the guy on a bet instead.
I had thought of this as standard teen movie fare, but while discussing (OK, singing songs from) “Guys and Dolls” with my mom, I realized this was a much earlier version.

Are there earlier versions still? Is it in Shakespeare somewhere?

Just go ahead and list all the versions you can think of up to the present.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

My Fair Lady/Pygmalion involves a bet, but it’s not to date the girl. Love is the end result, though. …Still looking for earlier date-bet stories…

Taming of the Shrew is pretty close.

10 things I hate about you.

There was an episode of* Mr. Belvedere* about this where Kevin has to take an ugly/fat girl to a party. Not sure he ended up liking her so much as just feeling bad (and coming clean.)

As a fat young girl, seeing that this sort of thing could happen really kept me from dating for a long time

…Which is a modern-day adaptation of Taming of the Shrew.

I’ve always heard “Pygmalion” referenced when this plotline is brought up. Wikipedia has an article ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pygmalion_(play) ) with a like to this site: http://www.pygmalion.ws/stories/
