The Girl Scouts are not happy, and I wonder if they’ll change as a result of this.
Maybe they should just merge?
Cubs and Scouts have accepted girls in the UK for some years. Brownies and Girl Guides (what we call Girl Scouts) are still single sex and seem to be doing fine.
-Say, Romeo. What about your promise to the He-Man-Woman-Haters-Club?
-I’m sorry, Spanky. I’ve got to live my own life.
Scouts Canada went coed back in 1998. So far, like after gay marriage, still not a hellscape.
As a Cubmaster, it doesn’t feel like that big of a deal to me. Families with sisters participate in all activities anyway, why not let them earn awards, too?
Boy Scouts, though, I see some challenges. On a global view, the teenage Boy Scouts may want to be in environments without girls around, so I do get that. On a personal view, I cannot wait for my daughter Anya to get her Eagle Scout like Daddy!
This is the only qualm I have, assuaged by the fact dens will apparently be unigender and packs will have the opportunity of mixing genders or not.
That, and the fact it’s apparently legally permissible to run a single-gender children’s club, so new groups could form to be exclusively unigender if there were enough demand.
My daughters tried the distaff version of Scouting and felt gypped that the boys got to do fun things, like camp. Me, I got camping onto the list of things I never want to do again because we did it once a month, year-round. It loses its charm when your sleeping bag is flooded or nowhere near warm enough.
As for having girls in the BSA, it woulda beat the gay guys in my patrol.
Will the Boy Scouts have to change their name before much longer?
Young Person Scouts of America (YPSA).
Trumpen Jugend?
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have such different activities that I don’t really see why there would be any overlap problem. Only those into the “back to nature” stuff will go for Boy Scouts.
Oh fuck off. Girl Scouts have plenty of outdoor nature-based activities.
Seriously. Girl Scouts is about camping too.
I have a lot of sour thoughts about why the hell girls would want to be in the Boy Scouts after all the hijinks in the past few years, especially with Girl Scouts available. Heck, I’m not sure why boys want to be.
Did I ever mention the time I got kicked out of the Boy Scouts for eating a Brownie?
Yes, Girl Scouts has some outdoor activities. No, they are not about camping. They have a much more urban setup. That’s not to say they don’t do camping, but that’s not what they are about. There are so many activities that do not involve the outdoors, and so many badges that are much more urban based. We’ve even discussed this difference before on this very board.
I even got into a discussion a few years ago with a guy who had sent his daughters to Girls Scouts and they were dissatisfied because it wasn’t like Boy Scouts, which they had done something similar to in another country. He specifically was asking me about organizations like Boy Scouts that were coed.
I will not respond to further attacks on me.
The mixed South African org is just “Scouts SA”
My daughter is a patrol second. She came up from Cubs.
Proud father of an Eagle Scout here. It’s welcome. My son got so much out of Scouting. My daughter tried GS and it was very, very different in very practical ways - no camping, merit badge activities, hikes in hard weather, incredibly cool big trips (e.g. Philmont, a 90-mile+ rugged hike in the Western plains, and Seabase a scuba trip), etc. It would be great for girls to have access to all that.
Don’t care whether the Scouts are coed or unisex, as long as we can still buy those overpriced-but-highly-addictive cookies.
Don’t tell others to fuck off outside of the Pit.
Just so people know, there’s an active debate there on this subject in GD.
