I just saw this movie, about the Teena Brandon story. I read about Teena Brandon on the Crime Library website a couple of years ago, and the story has been preying on my mind ever since. I know the movie’s not 100 % accurate, but it’s pretty close. For some reason, I have always really felt this story in my heart.
For those out there that don’t know the story, I would explain it but I couldn’t do it justice. Please try www.crimelibrary.com.
Anyway, after watching the movie I have two things to say:
-
I could never be as brave as Brandon. For all the lies, the deceit and the stories he made up, he was only trying to live the lifestyle he felt most right in. I guess this was the quality that kept me…I can’t think of the right word. Spellbound? Intrigued? They don’t sound right for a brutal rape and murder.

I am SO glad I didn’t grow up in smalltown America that I could almost swear in Cafe Society. Don’t get me wrong, I truly love living in this country but give me suburbia any day.
I was also wondering; when I rent a movie like this or even buy it, who would the proceeds go to? The movie company? Hilary Swank? The producers?
Anyway I just wanted to go somewhere and share with someone. Brandon Teena, here’s wishing you could have lived a full long life, and become whomever you truly wanted to be.
