What your opinions on male and female dogs? I have been seriously thinking of getting a puppy (pug). My first thought was female only. I have only had female dogs.
But now I am considering a male. I have heard they are friendlier and more affectionate.
My only real object to male dogs is the external gentials. That penis just hangs right out there.
And yea, the penis just hangs out there(although unless neutered the testicles tend to be more noticeable) for males. I’m not sure why this should be a big deal. The female’s genitals are similarly exposed, especially if she’s in heat and swollen.
Male or female, both can be good pets, the major factor is what kind of owner you are.
Male dogs neutered early are virtually indistinguishable from female dogs–no testicles, the penis stays small and nubby, and some dogs never do learn to lift a leg when they pee. I have a border collie mix who’s two years old and although he does pick his leg up, barely, he has yet to actually pee ON something, i.e., “mark.” On the other hand, I had a bitch who would quite often lift her leg against a tree, so there ya go.
Generally speaking, it’s less the sex of the dog than a combination of the breed and the “alphaness” of the individual dog that’s the best indicator of temperament. An alpha bitch of an aggressive breed is much more “male” in character than an omega dog of a timid breed.
I have been following your threads and thought I give you my 2 cents worth.
We have a male pug and he is the sweetest dog in the world.
We got him to be a companion for our male Lhasa Apso, to hopefully relieve some of his separation anxiety. (it worked! )
After a brief feeling out process, they are just like brothers now. They play, fight, and sleep together.
We got Boris at 10 weeks from a home breeder and were able to see both parents on site in a family setting. I think we paid around $550 IIRC.
Here is a picture of Boris at about 12 weeks. The “big dog” is 17 pounds to give you an idea of size.
This is what he looks like now. He is a handsome fella.
My so wanted a female pug but we fell in love with this little guy and he has been such a good dog. We’ve never regretted getting a boy.
Good Luck ,
I hope to see pics of your new pup soon.
Hi Smartie!
Your new Bear looks like he’s gonna be a good one. Give him some scritches for me
The penis only interferes with tummy rubs, but not so much that a compromise can’t be reached. I used to only want female dogs because of the penis issue, but my boy (also Boris) was such a good dog, that male v. female will never be a factor for me anymore.
Thanks, Sherm, will do! We had a little mini-crisis this afternoon–he’s a bit of a food/treat guarder and he snapped at one of the cats who got close to him while he was chewing on a bone but he got an instant dose of “Daddy is THE Big Dog” so now he’s very sorry. We’re also working with him to learn that anything in the house is OURS, and he only has it on sufferance. So we take his toys away pretty much constantly. Kids gotta learn there’s no fighting in da house…
I always had girl dogs growing up, but my last two have been boys and I’ve been very happy with them. Within my limited sample, the male dogs have been friendlier and more affectionate. Strangely, they’ve also been less competitive with each other than the girl dogs were. ymmv
