Where you see “diagnosis”, other see a “question”.
Easy, tiger.

I think he’s thinking mental and physical gender are disassociated. He’s not saying Manning has Dissociative Identity Disorder.
No, he’s not.
Just wanted to know if, as a general principle, people thinking they are something they are not should be treated by letting them think YOU believe it too. Or is this unique to gender identity disorder? And if it is unique, is that based on science, or politics?
In any case, the data on whether sex reassignment is beneficial or not is inconclusive. Governments shouldn’t be paying for procedures of dubious benefit.
No, but transexuality is not a dissociative disorder.
I wonder, if he really,* really* wanted to be a Poodle, would he request to be held in a pound/kennel? Would the Army have to give him distemper shots and groom him?
Yeah, I picked the wrong term there. What is the proper term for believing you are something you are not?
Who cares? It’s got nothing to do with this conversation.
Speaking very generally about mental illness, something is only a disorder if it impedes on your ability to lead a ‘normal’ life. What ‘normal’ is depends on the person, their therapist and societal conventions and the goal is to curtail destructive behaviors. If a transperson is suicidal but recognizing them as their preferred gender alleviates suicidal tendencies, then that’s what we do. Screaming at someone about their chromosomes while they self-destruct is at most a pyrrhic victory but I personally would call it an abject loss.
And again, is that how we should deal with other types of identity disorders, or is gender unique in some way?
I’d also add again that as far as whether the government should pay for Mannings’ preferred treatment is a big “no”. Gender reassignment has not proven to be effective at relieving the problems associated with the disorder.
Beyond the utter nonsense of the claim, this is way too close to an insult to be posted in Great Debates (and really has nothing to do with the topic).
If you feel the need to post this sort of thing, open a thread in The BBQ Pit.

Gender is unique in a way, since it is* defined* as the way a person perceives him or herself.
This glib reply borders on threadshitting.
Both of these comments are not pertinent to this discussion.
If you would like to start the 300th+ thread on the validity of gender re-assignment, feel free to do so.
EVERYONE: Private Manning’s sexuality may be an interesting topic, but it has nothing to do with how appropriate the Court’s sentence may have been. Take that topic to a new thread.

I do agree that curtailing suicidal tendencies should be the end goal, but I’ve noticed that for other identity disorders, psychiatrists actually do try to make the patient see reality, even if that reality is too unpleasant for the patient to tolerate.
If letting someone be who they think they are even if they are not fixes the problem, then I’m all for that being the conventional treatment. I just wonder if treating gender identity disorder differently is based on political motivations and is actually harming the patients.
Oh, sorry, didn’t know there were a lot of threads on the subject.
How’s that research going?
Eddie Slovik.
Can you elaborate?
Technically, a firing squad. Non-technically, a fucking travesty of justice that wouldn’t be used by any decent human being as an example as to how much punishment any other prisoner should get, up to and including Bradley Manning.
You asked for someone who got the death penalty for a less serious offense. Do don’t get to discount this example because someone got a more severe punishment for a less serious crime. You see the contradiction?
