Brady Campaign gives Obama an 'F' for gun control

Nothing like that war, actually. That was an occupying force model. The colonists didn’t actually conquer the Bristish Empire, you know. There was also not much inequality in technology, and most importantly, the British just didn’t give all that much of a shit.

We’re not taking about a civil war, we’re talking about a bunch of cammied out rednecks with deer rifles and beer bellies trying to overthrow the United States Government. It would make for a few seconds of amusement on the cable news networks. That’s about it.

Agreed. I wasn’t saying that the NRA was any worse than other interest groups in that way; it just feels worse for me, as being a member makes me the target for the routine.

If people were only buying “assault weapons,” I would agree, but I get the impression that they’ve been stocking up on everything.

IMO, the Assault Weapons ban was a silly and useless piece of legislation, but its actual impact on me and my ability to keep and use the three guns I owned at the time was zero. Ditto for the vast majority of all gun owners.

What organization would you recommend? I’ve looked into some “alternative to the NRA” groups in the past, but each seemed willing to accept more gun controls than I was comfortable with.

I can live with federal minimum sentences for, say, felon in possession of a weapon. As annoying as the NRA often is to me, I’ve never seen them make an unreasonable compromise on the 2nd Amendment; that’s why I’m still a member. And I have seen them turn savagely against some Republicans who failed to protect the 2nd Amendment, so I don’t see the evidence for your assertion that the NRA is merely an extension of the Republican party.

The last time I recall someone talking about armed resistance with a straight face was about forty years ago, a black Maoist, about how all the black men who served in Viet Nam would come back trained and radicalized, and form the military core of the uprising…

There was probably more, but I was making placating gestures as I moved toward the nearest exit…

That which goes around, comes around from the other direction…

Is there a person on the ground, who “remotely pilots” the UAV and can be shot in the head?

Please stop intentionally missing the point.

So it’s a one person insurrection now. His Jethros are completely incapable of any type of coordinated action.

If the Army is anything like the Navy, yes they do. I’ve seen stuff that really makes me wonder where the term “An Officer and a Gentleman” comes from.

DtC has no inention of debating anything here. He’s allowed to get away with namecalling and unfavorably stereotyping gunowners, for some reason, and will continue to run with that as long as anyone keeps responding to his taunts of “Jethro” and “redneck.”

Actually, it had zero effect on gun owners as long as they owned the banned guns in question before they were banned. The magazine capacity limit, for instance, made it so anybody who bought a gun for 10 years had an artificially limited magazine coming standard with their purchase. Oh, you could buy a pre-ban magazine, but they came at inflated prices.

People are buying everything up now because they want to get what they want before the capricious regulations are re-implemented. Are they going to be re-implemented? Not right this second, no. But who’s to say what might happen a few years from now. I’m not overly concerned about it, but people that are concerned about it are driving up prices and making everything scarce at the moment.

Not gun owners, just gun nuts. Most gun owners are not nuts about it. The people I refer to as gun nuts are the ones who are ridiculously preoccupied with the subject, and never shut up about it and prioritize that issue to the exclusion of all others. It;s kind of like listening to people who never shut up about legalizing weed. I agree with both groups in principle, but neither issue is of the all-consuming importance that they think it is, and their zealotry on the subjects makes them caricatures of themselves.

Don’t bother weaseling. There’re too many archived threads with you doing the exact same thing for your excuses to have any credibility. Virtually every gun-related thread in which you have ever participated will contain examples.

By Og, that’s it! Let them buy all the guns they want, so long as they smoke weed! At a certain point, they will bust out laughing, sell all their guns and buy more weed! And then the price of weed will skyrocket and…mmmmm.

Never mind.

No, he’ll continue to run with that as long as the board admin lets him.

Yeah, but for the better part of seven years now, your definition of a “gun nut” seems to be fairly consistently synonymous with “gun owners*,” and “anyone who thinks the 2nd amendment is still relevant.”

*That is, as long as they’re guns that you approve of. Not those mean, scary, black rifles and handguns that only “gun nuts” have, but just the single-shot rifles and shotguns that you feel is all that “real hunters” need, right?

And you also consistently refuse to debate without name calling, snide innuendos, and the kind of broad-brush offensive stereotyping that, if it were about any other group of people, would’ve had your sorry ass banned years ago.

Let me ask you straight up, Ex: Are there no gun nuts? None? He’s making it all up? You have never met someone who owned a weapon and thought “You know, this guy probably shouldn’t be armed.”?

Yes, there are some people who match your idea of gun nuts. The thing is, DtC brings this schtick to every single gun-related thread in which he participates. He makes broad and insulting generalizations, uses insulting nicknames, and intentionally miscontrues the statements made by others. He then weasels that he is talking only about the “gun nuts.” Board admin allows him to continue to do this in thread after thread.
If I started doing similar things in threads about gays, blacks, etc. I’d be thrown out of here so fast I’d leave a vapor trail. I’d quite properly be labeled a disruptive troll and banned. DtC gets a pass though, because it’s okay to do this in gun threads and to the gun owners on this board.

It actually had a nice positive effect on my wallet. I bought a Polytech AK-47 just before the ban for $199 new. I sold it a few years later for $1200 used. The gun store in Va Beach where I bought it had pallets of these things. If my crystal ball had been working a little better, I would have invested my life savings in the things. Really wish I still had that gun though. Lots of fun it was.

I’m starting to think the general tone of SDMB skews just slightly left of center.

And yet the Admin permits the existence of a (rather lengthy) Pit thread. Freely available, I might add.

And if Ex is comfortable with you speaking on his behalf, I have no problem with that.

Nonetheless…you admit the existence of people that we may, for lack of a better term, call “gun nuts”. Doggyknees consistently insists that those are the people he is talking about. But you know that he really isn’t, because…you can peer into his mind?

Please assure us that you will only use your powers for good.

And yet, here you are. Is it some form of outreach? Missionary work? Masochism?

If anything the “Assault Weap:rolleyes:ns” ban put more of the banned weapons in public hands than were there before the ban was enacted.

I’ve been a licensed dealer for over 25 years. Prior to the ban I sold very few of those types of guns. Afterward people were buying up all the pre-ban guns and magazines they could get their hands on. Including guns that were absolute shit like the Intratec TEC-DC9 that previously I couldn’t have given away.

The theory that eventually the supply would dry up and nobody could get them is nonsense. Guns, even if only minimally cared for, last virtually forever. As long as they exist somewhere, it’s possible to get one.

Guns that had been sitting in distributors warehouses for years, even decades, were now in the general public thanks to the ban.
