Yesterday I had my teeth cleaned and the hygienist was describing her Memorial Day trip to Evansville, Indiana, and how light the traffic had been. Somehow we got on the subject of Kentucky Burgoo and then to Brain Sandwiches at Hilltop Inn in Evansville. I remember having brains and eggs as a little kid and deciding I didn’t need any more of that.
The way the hygienist described the sandwiches, though, I’m going to try to get by that place next time I’m in that area. They must be something special.
Do you live near there? Have you tried them? If you haven’t had those, do you have similar sandwiches in your area? How are they?
How important is it to you to have eaten brains?
I asked her if there’s a zombie community in the area. She didn’t laugh. I wonder what that means.
I’ve had brain tacos. I think they are called tacos de sesos. They’re actually pretty good, but really fatty. A GIS tells me that they are 60% fat. I’m hoping that I didn’t get mad cow disease.
I live in Evansville and yup, been to the Hilltop many times and they do indeed have WONDERFUL brain sandwiches. When asked to describe them, I would say they taste something like a very large breaded tenderloin sandwich. I like mine with ketchup, pickle & onion.
The Hilltop just plain out has great food… their catfish fiddlers are the bomb, and whatever you gt, be sure you get a side of fried potatoes… mmmmm. And leave room for dessert… their pies are outstanding! They used to have a turtle cheesecake that was to die for, but last couple times I went it wasn’t on the menu.
Y’all gimme a yell next time you’re in Evansville, we’ll meet for a brai sandwich!
I also had brains and eggs a few times at my Kentucky-born grammaw’s house. I don’t want any more brains, although I am always up for sweetbreads. Go figure.
