Brainstorming : The PURSAM Project

I’m getting a strange idea. What could possibly turn into a huge idea. This would not be SD related but with the blessings of one of the mods here, I’m proposing it here and looking for a bit of brainstorming of how to do it, how to implement it, set up a website for it, what should be on the site, any other ideas that you feel might contribute to the project.

You will think I’m loony. If you don’t already.

It’s called The PURSAM Project.

PURSAM stands for “Perform Unexpected Random Spontaneous Acts of Madness.”

I don’t use madness in the negative sense, but in the sense of the unexpected, the things that you can do spontaneously to help someone else break out of their shell. Nothing illegal, of course, and certainly nothing that would cause harm to another human being.

I had to go to the hospital yesterday. While I was walking the sidewalk to the front door I saw a group of doctor who looked SO serious. The only think I could think to do was, as I was passing them by I raised my right hand and said “Dos Vodanya, Comrades!” and kept walking on. Without looking back to see a reaction. Just as a random act of madness.

But maybe it made one of them think in a little different direction.

In a sense, sometimes I think what the world calls sanity is actually madness. A lot of us don’t trust our government. Health care is prohibitively expensive for a good number of Americans and out of the question for some in other countries. We boil our minds by scratching the ground for every cent we can dig out of it. We sit in front of the television and veg out all night thinking that will improve our education and intelligence.

This is what we call sanity. I call it madness. I want to reverse that.

Maybe the PURSAM Project can help people break out a little bit. If nothing else, making it can just help people laugh for a few seconds. Maybe for some people that’s all they need. Physics tell us that objects moving in one direction only need a small nudge to move them in a different direction. Maybe some of us can be the nudge.

Yes, it sounds Pollyannish. Yes, it sounds nuts. But stranger things have been proposed. And yes, it does sound like delusions of grandeur but changing the world begins with one step. Or maybe just changing a bit of your community. Or maybe just your family. Or one of your friends.

One domino topples the other.

I’m finished ranting. I’d be interested in hearing what ideas or suggestions others might have in the project. God knows I could use the help; even if someone good at graphics could design us a logo or something. Or if you even have to take me to the Pit and call me a complete psycho. I’ve been called worse. If you’d prefer your comments to be kept quiet, you can always e-mail them to me privately. But I think this is a step I need to get started on.

Yours, getting stranger every day,

Euty

You’ve just taken one of my greatest ideas and given it a name.

It’s an excellent idea but a very difficult one to orchestrate. But I’m willing to help for sure.

Sounds interesting. I hate how I find myself in a rut, doing the same stuff over and over again.

Eutychus Are you familiar with role-playing games? Vampire The Masquerade? The Malkavians?

You’ve very nicely described Malkavian philosophy ‘Society teaches us to conform to a certain brand of insanity. So, everybody is insane, but they don’t notice because society tells them they’re normal.’

Personally, I engage in random acts of madness most of the time.

Might as well count me in, too. Lord knows I do enough strange things anyway, I could at least attribute them to a Humanitarian Effort.

I love the concept, Euty, and practice it often. Just today at lunch I met Ronald McDonald, live and in person. Most of the other adults in the place were doing their level best to ignore him - you know, doing the sane thing. Not me. I had my picture taken with him, shared my newspaper with him and joked with with him. I get to pick up a free copy of the picture next week. I think I’ll frame it.

If someone dies while performing one of these random acts, does his name then become Robert Paulson?

Okay … here’s what I’ve got so far :

First rule of PURSAM is, you don’t talk about PURSAM.

Is this affiliated with neurocam in any way?
(I believe it is an experimental psyops front for the CIA.)

With all the Fight Club references and with a few e-mails that I’ve gotten, I have to disassociate this with the type of activity that went on in that movie. We’re trying to get indivuals to express their individuality, not get people to join some sort of secret club which would eventually drown spontaneity and individuality. The last thing we want to do is create a secret society. We won’t be handing out assignments or organizing secret e-mail chains. We want to encourage as much participation as we can, so the more people who know about it and maybe encourage others to parctice some of the ideas, the better.

The first rule of PURSAM is talk about PURSAM.

Funny you should mention that, since the deadline for my first Neurocam “mission” was today. I wonder what it’s all about.

Euty, this is a very interesting idea. I’ll spread the word whenever I get the chance. I’m already thinking of random acts of madness…

Okay, we’re getting this puppy started:

The PURSAM! Project

If the domain hasn’t filtered down to your server yet, try :

Let me know what you think.

Just gotta say that Pursam! should, IMHO, definitely be pronounced like Kazam!
Pur-SAM!

I’ve actually been saying it as PUR-sam, but now that I think about it, I like that pronunciation better! Thanks!

not to hijack or anything but how do you set up a website so quick and get a domain name like that?

Push and enterprise, my son. Push and enterprise.

Okay … having a day out of work doesn’t hurt either.
