Brand new mattress damaged, what would you do?

I am moving into a larger apartment in my building. Two weekends ago I bought a mattress/box-spring set for about $600 and had them delivered up to the new apartment.

The delivery guys put together the frame and put the mattress and box spring on the frame.

It was good.

Two days ago the building manager said that they were going to have pest control spray the unit before I moved in, as a precaution I assume. Sprayers came today. I just went up to check on the place and the sprayers had put my mattress and box spring on the floor, leaning up against a wall. That annoyed me because I didn’t want the mattress on the floor because if there were any bed bugs, they could just hop onto the mattress.

So I grumbled and put the box spring on the frame, then put the mattress on the box spring. When I touched the mattress, I noticed it was wet. Upon further inspection, it’s wet all around the edges and there is even a watermark!!! On my brand new mattress!!! GRRRRRRR…

Ok so I’m seriously pissed off.

What should I do? Nothing? Something? I know nobody has a problem here telling people to get over it so I want to know if this is a “get over it” or a “kill them all by torture!!!” thing.

If it matters at all, I am not yet living in the new apartment.

I would seek replacement from the pest control company.

Particularly since you still have the receipt, showing the mattress as newly purchased.

Yup - your first call is the pest control company, and find out why your brand new mattress is wet and stained, and what they plan to do about it.

ETA: I’m thinking it’s possible that they sprayed the mattress for bedbugs - still best to call and find out.

You may be right, Cat Whisperer, but I wouldn’t expect a professional treatment to leave a stain.

I don’t know what a bedbug treatment would entail; a stain on your brand-new mattress doesn’t sound right to me, either.

I think the stain is just from getting wet isn’t it? It’s a light tan mark that runs along the edge of where it got wet, which is all along the side that was on the floor. The other side and top and bottom are damp and I can’t see a water mark on those parts.

Also the mattress warranty states that any stains void the 10 year warranty.

I did tons of research and checking around for sales and I got mine at the Brick on a 50% off sale so it’s a really good mattress.

Should I wait till tomorrow and see if it’s dried and seems like it’s going to be ok? I hope it doesn’t go moldy.

I would still call them to complain and find out what exactly they sprayed on the bed (and if its okay to even sleep on those chemicals!). The sooner they know about it the better, that way they can’t use the “you did it and are just trying to get money out of us” bit.
