Branding as punishment

I just read that the United States last branded individuals (as punishment handed down from the judiciary) in 1844.

Are there any countries that still do that? If not, when was it last practiced? Finally, how common of a punishment was it?

It seems your “google fu” is not working today.

Here ya go… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_branding

It truly is a bad example. It dose not answer the OP.

I don’t think there is any jurisdiction where branding is likely to be awarded as a punishment and even less likely to be carried out. Might still be on the book some place though, where the have forgotten it was there.

according to Amnesty International branding was a punishment in Iraq at the very least as late as 1994

Amnesty is not exactly the most reliable in such matters.

sorry… the 2nd link is from Human Rights Watch

Can you elaborate on this, please.

The French Wikipedia article says that France stopped branding people in 1832. In France, at least during the time of the Bourbon kings, you could be branded with a lily (fleur-de-lys) for certain crimes (as portrayed in fiction in The Three Musketeers or The Queen’s Necklace, two novels by Dumas). This practice stopped at the time of the French revolution (1791). A law passed in 1810 (post-French revolution) specified that people could be branded with a mark corresponding to their crime: T = travaux forcés (forced labour), TP = travaux à perpétuité (forced labour, lifetime sentence), F = faussaires (counterfeiters). The law was abolished in 1832.

Really? Do you have examples of Amnesty International making mistakes in their reports?

There was one guy Branded back in the 60s. Does that count?

Well it’s certainly better than NO EXAMPLE, which is the sum total of YOUR contribution to the thread, IMHO.

At least it was a link to some factual information, as opposed to just your opinion.
