Brasil 2014

Colombia had the corner kick and lofted the ball front-and-center. The first player to touch the ball down in the box was a Brazilian player. The whistle was blown at that point marking Colombia offsides.

Off the Brazilian player, the ball dropped to the turf and a Colombian player knocked it in the net. The goal was disallowed.

I don’t know the rules well enough to know if Colombia should have been called offsides given that a Brazilian player was playing the ball. Regardless, the whistle was blown and thus presumably the play was dead, rightly or wrongly.

Thanks! Hmm, again not sure what feed I get on the local TV.

And apparently FIFA defended the ref from yesterday’s game. Why?

They are a gigantic, massively corrupt and massively profitable organization. I wouldn’t expect self-criticism is a skill they have developed.

You know, I thought about practicing racial discrimination in soccer, but then my favorite player mumblingly read a script prepared by FIFA and now I’ve thought better of it.

Higuaín is playing all by himself up front. I believe that’s how he prefers it. Let’s see if he can prove less than worthless today.

Pretty goal! In this game, I’ll cast aside my anti-Argentina feelings and root for them.

Well some of my Brazilians friends are mad. Suarez was penalized for biting another player after the game was done, while another player knee-kicked Neymar, caused a fracture, and got no penalty.

Well Higuaín just scored, a beautiful strike. Good enough to not be useless?

Maybe this tactical change is just what he needed. Very nice.

They should get this ref for the final. He’s had some excellent no-calls on both teams. Just because you fall down, it doesn’t mean you deserve a foul.

I hope Di Maria is okay. He is pretty essential.

Some very good defending from Kompany.

Oof. Di Maria is out. This is bad news for Argentina keeping possession.

Bummer for Di María!

I’m sick today and barely got any sleep last night. I’m having a hard time getting engaged in this game and can’t tell if it is because I’m so tired or because the game isn’t that exciting. What are your thoughts so far?

Go Argentina!

I agree that it’s been a bit slow since the goal. I think Argentina is content to slow it down a bit and maybe Belgium are waiting for the inevitable counterattacks, of which there have been very few. The announcers said that most of Belgium’s goals come afte the 70th minute, so maybe they are just biding their time.

Just to go back to this, since it’s half-time. What do your friends want? Like Suarez, Zuniga will not be able to play any more games in this World Cup. So, do they want him to miss some games for his club side, Napoli? I would be cool with that; he injured a player seriously pretty much intentionally. But there’s also the case that jumping up and getting kneed in the back is part of the game. Being intentionally bitten is not any part of the game and deserves to be punished as such.

What a chance for Higuaín! He’s got to get that in the corner!

He’s Italian, and referees in Serie A, so he presumably has considerable experience in evaluating flops and dives.

On a different topic, i know this will not be news to anyone who has been watching the Cup, but i just marvel at Messi’s dribbling ability every time he has the ball. His ball control is just amazing, and in this aspect of the game he seems far, far superior even to other world-class players.

One of the statlords at 538 has done an analysis of Messi vs his peers. He’s very exceptional on many counts Lionel Messi Is Impossible | FiveThirtyEight

The ref just chased down a complaining player and gave him what for. The Spaniard from last night should take a lesson.
