This confuses me. The extra time at the end of the first half “counts,” but the extra time at the end of the second half doesn’t?
Yes, it does. Mr Shine is referring to the 30 minutes of added extra time that comes if the game is still tied after the end of the extra time of the second half. Clear as mud? Good.
“Stoppage” or “injury” time tacked onto the end of a half vs "extra time " or “overtime” after two halves when the game remains tied.
Ah, gotcha. I was confused by the bolded “90 minutes” part.
Just throwing my prediction in: Germany will win, probably in normal time but extra time is a possibility - I don’t think it will (and really hope it doesn’t) go to penalties. As people have said upthread, Messi’s fantastic, but Germany has a talent for containing fantastic players. Plus, Germany’s just the better team overall.
No they didn’t. You only have three substitutions to begin with. Coaches typically use all three every game, my guess is Van Gaal did too. Against Argentina he brought on Huntelaar and Janmaat, both had played before; against Costa Rica he also brought on Huntelaar, who had already played against Mexico. So that’s half the substitutes in this long matches that had played before. He also brought Lens for Depay and Clasie for De Jong. Who were being spared there? Why am I even doing this with for you when you could just look it up yourself and realize all on your own that you’re wrong?
While I desperately hope that the Argentines win, I simply don’t think they have enough attacking quality to do it, especially with Di María out and Agüero injured. Lavezzi has been decent and Palacio hasn’t been asked to do much, but think how much better you’d feel if you could throw Carlos Tevez on as a substitute. I realize that there are a lot of dressing room issues and the fact that Tevez and Messi don’t seem to gel well together, but I still feel his omission from the squad was a mistake. Sabella had to know that Agüero was walking wounded, and unlikely to pull a Maradona, and yet he still decided to go into the World Cup relying on Lavezzi and Palacio, not exactly Mueller and Klose.
Unusually, I think this is the first time in the whole tournament that Argentina is wearing their away kit. That’s six games wearing the same shirt.
Hardly a prediction, just a whimsical thought pulled directly from my ass. Which is kinda my default mode.
Some people get the terminology mixed up, which can be confusing.
“Extra time” = over time. It’s like the “extra” in extra innings.
The time “added on” after 45’ and 90’ is correctly referred to as stoppage time, injury time, among other terms.
But the idea that a game won in extra time is still recorded as a draw is news to me. As far as I know, whether you win in 90’ or two hours, the result is recorded as a win. A draw is officially counted only if the game is not decided on the field and must be broken by PKs.
It’s not. That’s just how bookies set their book.
William Hill from what I remember did give you an express option of penalties to bet on.
Yes, bookies will sometimes offer that bet. The “90 mins” thing generally refers to markets like outcome of the game, final score, score/first goalscorer and so on.
I was wondering if the relative lack of options to bet on penalties has anything to do with the difficulty of bookies to work out the odds on such an outcome? I imagine because of this difficulty the odds offered to punters will not be generous.
A non gambler here so I may be talking out of my backside.
No, there are always extra time plus penalties odds available. This is sometimes described as a “to go through” bet. Since these only apply in knockout stages of international tournaments and cup finals, they’re relatively rare. So the fact that advertised line is usually just the 90 minutes plus injury time is more driven by convention. Plus, the odds always look more attractive to the bettor since there three options: win, lose and draw.
Closing ceremony was underwhelming. Like the Brazilian team.
Was that Gerad Pique jr that we saw?
Oh, you’re talking about betting. I was just going by the official record books. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Well at least I got Holland’s number right. Still picking Germany 1-0 in final.
I will be the contrarian and back Argentina to win 1-0. Their defense has been solid in the last few games and I am backing Messi to produce a touch of magic. Plus Germany has been quite erratic : eg. Ghana and Algeria.
Huh. Khedira out.
Well hey, if you’re going to have your wishes granted, at least you’re getting the important ones.
