The Swedish pundits think the Swiss chap that let the ball go between his legs confused the assistant referee, who was on the far side of the pitch with several players between him and the ball. The assistant thought that the ball had been touched by a Swiss player, so flagged. The referee wasn’t looking at where the “offside” player was, so had to trust the assistant.
Of course, the use of replays would have cleared this up in seconds.
I don’t have much of a dog in the fight but I was a bit surprised the Pogba decision wasn’t treated as a bigger deal. Was I the only one who thought that was worth sending him off?
England played Honduras in a “friendly” just before the tournament and I thought then that they wouldn’t get away with that amount and severity of fouling in the World cup itself.
Sorry to say they are getting just what they deserve.
And boof! eat that! foot like a traction engine etc. France now 3-0
I think if one went, both would have to as the initial challenge look liked a deliberate stamp to me. I think the ref did his best to keep a lid on it (to no avail in the end)
I was also satisfied with a yellow, but I was half expecting to see red there. It would have been a radical change of direction for the game and not really deserved I feel. Reminded me a lot of the Beckham incident versus Argentina though that got him sent off.
