Brasil 2014

I’m sure that electronic devices are not allowed at the bench. Very probably they’ll find a way to work around that.

I don’t think that was a goal. The whistle to end the match went just before the shot.

Yep; no goal. 5-2.

Fun game to watch. France were excellent, especially on the break.

It doesn’t appear to have counted. What a game. The French looked pretty strong in this game.

Strange move by the ref to end the game in the middle of an attack. Whatever, France looked very strong so far.

Aye, slightly unusual these days, but it was such a swift breakaway that the ref had probably decided to blow the final whistle beforehand.

Here’s the classic ref-blowing-full-time controversy, from the 1978 World Cup. Welsh ref Clive Thomas blows full time while a corner, resulting in a goal, is in mid-flight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsZ2Qfuwc_Q (Sorry, doesn’t seem to be a better video available)

I very much enjoyed France’s game – Giroud’s high boot withstanding. I expected the Swiss to do better, but was sure going in that this French side was not going to perform as they did in 2010. Switzerland only scored goals because The France starting cruising, nonchalance all the way. Best not do that against stronger opposition. Credit to the Swiss for not giving up!

The point of simultaneous games is mostly to get rid of the advantage that teams in the second game would have over the teams in the first game, not to really reduce the advantage that teams have when they know a draw or even a loss is sufficient to advance.

Well I’m aware of that, I witnessed the shameful Disgrace of Gijón - Wikipedia Germany-Austria 1-0 in 1982. My point was the ban of electronics on the bench.

I understand that that particular rule was introduced after the scandalous Germany-Austria game that was played during the 1982 WC in Spain.

Edit: Curses, ninja-ed again!

My bad, I was supposed to be responding to **Frank’s **earlier post which suggested that the chicanery this rule addresses has to do with having electronic devices or not. Knowing the score of the other game while that game is still going on can give a team an advantage, but that is not the advantage that the rule of simultaneously played third games is designed to address.

Ecuador leading Honduras 2-1, but Honduras should have received a penalty a couple of minutes back for holding in the box. The defender basically bear-hugged the Honduran player. I don’t know how the referee decided not to award the penalty.

That was the second clear foul in the box. Honduras will feel hard done-by.

Just watched Costa Rica-Italy. Oh My God. Almost made me forget about England being knocked out.

Donations are now being accepted to address the dire situation in Costa Rica. It seems the whole country is running out of beer, party whistles and condoms. Relief flights are standing by…please, won’t you help?

One ad on Hispanic media showed what we could expect in nine months.

A baby boom for the country.

No link yet as it seems it is a web only ad that plays at random before the soccer web videos in ESPN or Univision.

Found it, it was from Hundai.

The most unbelievable part? That the nurse would forget what took place 9 months ago…

So, if people were forced to take a choice between A and B before it all started where would the balance have been?

Is it more likely that CONCACAF teams will
A. Win 0 games
or
B. Win 4+ games
?

Four games is only one each. I would take that bet every day and twice on Sunday. Especially as there is no way Mexico and the US would combine for zero wins. Costa Rica is a great surprise, but let’s not crown CONCACAF just yet. Mexico, the US, and Honduras are performing pretty much exactly as predicted.

I would’ve set the over/under at 2.5. Hmm. If forced I probably would have taken the 0.

Entering this Cup the Mexican team left behind more ruins than the Aztecs.

Ghana is still wondering how the hell the US side even found their goal after the US spent 80 solid minutes milling about on the other end of the field.

Clearly divine providence is favoring CONCACAF. Place your bets accordingly.
