Braveheart on the SciFi channel?

Tonight the SciFi channel aired BraveHeart. While I enjoyed BraveHeart, I just don’t see how it fits into the Science Fiction channel. Anyone?

It fills 3 hours.

Think of it as an example of the “Alternate History” sub-genre.

It certainly only bore the most slight relation to what really happened.

Braveheart was from Mars. You didn’t know?

Aie, my name’s Conner McCleod of the clan McCleod, from the planet Zeist

Hey! You! Get off of McCleod!

(damn I’m old…)

Well, he does see his wife’s ghost…

LOL, nice.

I was wondering the same thing. WTF?!?!

As DrFidelius pointed out, the movie is closer to fantasy than historical drama. So I’d say it qualifies for SciFi.

Wait! Are you saying that Wallace didn’t really yell out “FREEDOM!” as his guts were being ripped out??!?!?!
I am Joe’s crestfallen visage.

“FREEDOM is a Yang Worship Word.”
Maybe that’s the connection.

Well, it more like “OUCH!”

But if you listened just right it sounded like “Freeeeeeeeedoom!”

Yeah, I saw that too and went “Huh?”

I’ll go with the speculative fiction. What if Wallace was inspired by an actor (MAD MEL) from the future who decided to change his motivations and much of teh events in his life.

Spooky

Why not? They played Cape Fear a few years back.

Remember, the Sci-Fi channel has given up on focusing on a small demographic. That is why they cancelled their best Sci-Fi show, Farscape.

It does not surprise me at all if they start airing more and more mainstream, non Sci-Fi movies.

Of course, knowing a little of the real history (or at least having a passing familiarity with Marlowe’s Edward II) spices up your MST3K-style taunting of the movie a great deal…

It’s not a channel that shows on SF; it’s a channel that caters to the SF demographic. There’s a HUGE overlap between the SfCA crowd and the SF crowd. They’re just playing to their audience.

Looks like I posted too soon. I predicted SciFi would rely on z-grade cheapies because AMC is now resorting to b-grade SF movies.

Then I saw the promo for Braveheart. Come to think of it, they showed the new Psycho on SciFi, too, but I dismissed it as plausibly within the horror/SF overlap.

No, this can’t happen. Braveheart can be on AMC (being Best Picture for 1995 gives it automatic “classic” status). Robocop 3 is reserved for SciFi. Not the other way around!
