Science Channel out Sci-Fi-ing The Syfy Channel

Even before the channel started its endless re-runs of Firefly there was The Science of Star Wars and Star Trek Nation which focused on how real science took inspiration from these movies and TV shows (along with a history of each franchise). Then came Dark Matters-- real stories of science told as if they were science fiction. And now-- real stories of science fiction with Stephen Hawking’s Sci Fi Masters and Ridley Scott’s Prophets of Science Fiction. They even have their own sci-fi Pawn Stars show: Oddities.

These shows are so not hard science but. . . I’ve watched every one. I’ve also watched all of both Idiot Abroad series. I feel bad about this as if I am responsible for the un-sciencing of The Science Channel.

To be fair I also watch Morgan Freeman’s Through The Wormhole, How The Universe Works and How It’s Made, so it’s not all my fault. And their schedule is no where near as anti-science as The Discovery Channel. What is your opinion on the direction The Science Channel’s seems to be headed?

I’d say about 95% of what they show on Animal Planet, The Science Channel, The Discovery Channel, The History Channel and even Nat Geo is pure garbage. There are a few good shows, bit hardly any. I applaud their shift to SciFi in the sense that those shows tend to at least be watchable.

If you want good science, you need to watch PBS: NOVA, Nature and Secrets of the Dead
