Breakfast in bed

Good lord - a 2 year kitchen remodel?! What on earth did you have done?

No, I couldn’t imagine my wife or me caring for a meal - or eating any food - in bed.

I may eat something real quite while reading as I am falling towards sleep. Maybe some cheese or gummy bears or something. I would never eat in bed. If I or my wife did something like that… present a meal in bed, I’d be thinking Body Snatchers.

When I’m up, I’m up. I certainly would not lounge around in bed. I can’t even do that when I’m sick. Can’t do it.

Yuck, no. I am uninterested in food until much later in the day. Coffee or tea, however…

But I prefer to have it after I’m up, dressed, teeth brushed, face washed. Then I sip it for a couple of hours before it’s food time.

Now, if someone were to go to all that trouble, I’d never turn it down, but getting into a position to eat without wearing the entirety of the meal makes it a real effort.

Never had it, never wanted it. Even when I was sick, I needed to get out of bed at least for a little while.

Plus I’m generally the first one up in the household.

I feel there was a missed opportunity for a waffle joke here.

“Pr-Eggo waffles, the Number One breakfast of pregnant mothers in the Nation, now with additional Pre-Natal vitamin fortification!”

I wasn’t too proud to do it, and I know at least some of you were thinking it as well.

Exactly this. You need to put it on a suitable tray (which we own) and then it’s quite nice, in a “someone is pampering me” way. I wouldn’t want to do it all the time, but for a special treat, it’s nice.

It was a birthday treat as a child. Breakfast in bed with birthday cards to open from the parents & Grandparents.

I remember jelly toast, chocolate milk, orange wedges and the funny pages being served on a tray on my birthday. I was on the top bunk so mom had to hoist it up. :smiling_face_with_tear: thanks Mama!

Every time I read the thread title I get Squeeze playing in my head.

The only time I remember is when we stayed at a B&B in San Francisco that used to be the residence of the Archbishop. They had no restaurant, so they brought a tray with breakfast as part of the deal, and we ate that in bed.
I’d rather eat sitting up myself. And not get crumbs in the bed.

I was forgetting the one night I stayed in a hospital. But since that time well over 30 years ago and today the quality of hospital food has improved a lot, based on the menus my daughters had when they were having their babies. Not bad at all.

I was pretty underwhelmed by the main courses at Northwestern Memorial when I was laid up there with rotavirus earlier this year. I mostly made do off the side dishes - fruit, soup, salad, et cetera. The best main course was a beef stew that at least had flavor to it even though it was greasy and the meat was questionable. I think the best meal I had the whole time was a lunch which just consisted of a big fruit plate with strawberries and grapes and melons and such.

Same for me. Got sold on early-morning “bed tea” during residence in Commonwealth countries, and decided just to put the matutinal cheese-bread-and-fruit on the same tray. Tidy, comfy, feet stay warm.

If I have somebody staying with me I will get up and make a proper breakfast with placemats on the table etc., but if it’s just me, gimme that cozy tasty thirty minutes of luxury to start the day. If I didn’t have to get up and assemble the tray contents myself, I guess it might be even better, but I live in hope of maybe one day having a robot butler that can manage it!

I’m very picky about my bedroom environment; no TV, and NO FOOD. Besides, eating in bed is something you do when you’re bedridden in a hospital. No thanks.

Agree. We do have a TV in the bedroom, but have not watched it for 3 years of so. I turned it on at the start of COVID for background noise as my office is in the loft over our bedroom.

Eating an actual meal in bed is just wrong IMHO.

My wife and I get it from our kids for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

It’s not terribly practical or comfortable for the reasons mentioned upthread. And usually we have to wait a looong time while it is being prepared.

But, oh, the sentiment is wonderful. It is so nice to hear the kids downstairs banging around in the kitchen, arguing over who gets to butter the toast, and the inevitable crash followed by an ominous silence.

But when they finally come up with the precariously balanced and overloaded tray, and big smiles of pride and accomplishment, it is the best thing ever.

And it usually ends up with all four of us (plus the cats) piled onto the bed sharing the tray-born feast.

Wonderful times.

(Until the cleanup  )

I’ve only tried it a couple of times. I find it uncomfortable. My legs start to ache after being in that position for too long. If you try to rearrange your position, the tray starts to tip. No thanks!

Bed is for sleeping or sex. Not for “luxuriating” or TV watching or reading or eating. It’s lousy for all 4 of those activiites and you almost certainly already have better facilities elsewhere in your residence for them.

Naw, bed is the very best place to read. I know there are people who have trouble sleeping who need to train themselves not to do anything else in bed, but that makes me sad.

I’m actually quite picky about keeping my bed clean, and i don’t snack in bed. The idea of crumbs in my bed is really icky. But with a suitable tray, you can have a very comfortable and contained breakfast in bed.

Incorrect! All you need is a big fluffy pillow and a decent light and bed is the very best place for reading! Better still, with an illuminated e-reader like a Kindle Paperwhite, you don’t need the light and the “book” is almost weightless. Bed is also great for movies and TV shows, though the TV in my bedroom hasn’t been turned on in years – my preference is a hand-held tablet where its closeness makes the image dominate the field of view and produces a near-theatrical experience.

Eating is a different matter because of crumbs and the risk of spills. One at least needs a proper bed table but the most I’ll have in bed is a non-crumbly snack like cheese or grapes.

This!

Third. I either read in bed or by the pool on vacation.

I love reading in bed! It’s the only place I read books other than outside on the deck in the summer. I used to love watching TV in bed but I wear glasses for distance and the TV has to be situated just right so I can lay on my side but then my glasses get in the way. I also didn’t want to fall asleep with my glasses on. I watch Netflix, etc on my Kindle Fire - no glasses needed!

Never understood the appeal. I don’t want to eat laying down or get crumbs in my bed. Just seems awkward, messy and uncomfortable.
