I’ve never had breakfast in bed - not on Mother’s Day, not on my birthday, not even when I was sick. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t consider it to be a treat. When I first wake up, I head to the bathroom to answer nature’s early call, so trapping me in bed with a tray table will not be welcome.
Add to that the chance of crumbs or spills - no thanks. Plus if I’m too sick to get out of bed to eat, chances are, I’m too sick to eat. OK, I’ve had breakfast in bed in the hospital, but that really doesn’t count.
Do you consider breakfast in bed to be a special event?
I get it on my birthday and Father’s Day, and the older kid & I make it for my wife on hers & Mother’s Day. Also if really sick or post-operative. One doesn’t have to be physically ill, maybe there are stitches or the like making walking awkward but sitting up is fine…
One sits up, and there’s a tray, so spillage isn’t a concern.
Never had it, kids planned to do it a couple times but since I get up at least an hour or two before they do it’s never really worked out.
They have done it for my wife a couple times and she loved it.
What’s the definition of “breakfast in bed”? As I type this, I’m literally eating my breafast in bed. Because my laptop is in my bed and I don’t have a kitchen table. I eat all of my meals in my bed, pretty much (except lunch on the weekdays). But I’m fully washed and dressed, and I’m not under the covers. Does this count?
If someone brought me any meal in bed, that would certainly be a special event. But the specialness wouldn’t be the bed. It would be the “someone bringing me a meal” aspect.
Never had it, never wanted it. I like to eat breakfast sitting up, and I don’t find sitting upright in bed to be especially comfortable. Maybe I need more pillows or something.
**hogarth **- I’m with you on the lack of comfort sitting in bed. I don’t even like to read in bed for that same reason. In fact, the only reason watching TV works is that we installed it at the right angle for viewing from our pillows.
Yeah, back in the early days Mrs M and I would sometimes fix a full English to eat in bed at the weekend, so yes to all three. It’s a slightly decadent lazy treat for whoever doesn’t have to fix it, and the one who does gets to bask in the other one’s enjoyment (and still eat a delicious breakfast in comfort).
We’ve ordered room service breakfast at hotels and had it in bed, don’t know if that counts, but is should because they change the sheets everday and you don’t have to worry about toast crumbs.
My wife and I treat ourselves occasionally on weekends. The key is keeping it simple. A steaming bowl of Creme of Wheat or Oatmeal. Some buttered toast with strawberry preserves. orange juice and an insulated carafe of coffee.
I usually wake up earlier and make it. Serve on our 2 lap trays and get back in bed. We’ll often watch the news on tv or read afterward. A mid morning nap (I’m always awake at 5:30 or 6AM) finishes off a lazy Sat together.
btw, creme of wheat or oatmeal is thick enough that it doesn’t slosh around carrying it from the kitchen. I wouldn’t serve cold cereal and milk in bed. Too easily spilled.
Same here. My wife and I get up very early. Even on weekends. I’ll often forgo breakfast on weekends unless my Wife and I go out to eat. In any case, I’m not hungry right when I wake up.
Just a note to add I mean a full breakfast here - Full English, for preference. I have coffee and porridge or an egg butty in bed much more regularly, like, twice a week.
Usually I get it on Father’s Day and my wife gets it on Mother’s Day. It’s usually a bagel with cream cheese and coffee. Problem is that both sons are now teenagers and it’s hard to drag them out of bed early enough to help on Sunday mornings.
I’m with you, FairyChatMom, although I have had it once so I can speak with a bit of experience. I didn’t like it. It was awkward and I worried about spills and crumbs. I don’t even like to have someone bring me a cup of coffee in bed. (Someone else making the coffee, instead of waiting for me to do it, is a good thing, tho!).
Never had it, never served it, never wanted it, and don’t really see the attraction. I’d rather sit outside with a bagel and a cup of coffee on our front porch on a warm summer morning. I wouldn’t object to being served a nice cup of coffee in bed, though.
Could someone clarify what a “Full English” breakfast is? We don’t have that term here, AFAIK.
