Breaking Bad 5.05 "Dead Freight" 8/12/12

Because he’s an unpredictable loose cannon.

Walt won’t let him be killed. If Walt ever needs someone killed without going through Mike, then Todd’s the man.

All through the heist sequence I was looking at Todd and thinking Landry’s robbing a train (Friday Night Lights). When the kid came by I was still thinking Landry. I thought he was going to be friendly and chat with the kid and send him on his way. Then he shoots him…Well Landry never would have done that.

That’s a good point but Walt might be outvoted. I hope not though. I love the idea of Walt getting his own personal hitman.

I don’t think he’s demonstrated that. He was told that no one must know of the heist and when someone saw them, he took care of it. He didn’t exceed his authority or disobey instructions or do something completely out of the blue. Lydia is far more an unpredictable loose cannon.

Oh, that’s great.

Two things made me - getting the train to stop at the exact place needed to access the tanker. And the notion that a couple of guys could get behind a loaded dump truck and push it off the tracks as if it was a Volkwagen.

Should we read into the fact that he was having a great time watching it with his dad, but refused to watch the movie with Hank?

You mean other than Mike and the protected 9 that Walt is under an obligation to make whole? If Walt quits, you can bet heavily on Mike knocking on his door.

They didn’t. They tried, but they didn’t. It took that huge pickup truck to do it. Looked like a big Dodge Ram Diesel something or other.

I thought about that. But a few episodes ago Mike wanted to get out of the business altogether. Hell, he thought he was out. Remember him sitting in his recliner, drinking a beer when the guys showed up and begged him to join their club. If Walt said “Fuck it, I’m out” I’m not sure Mike wouldn’t shake his hand and say “Nice knowing you”. The thing is, if Mike takes what he has and moves far enough away, he should be in the clear. I’m sure Mike can make himself disappear. The only tie Walt and Jesse should have to everyone else should be through Mike and with Mike gone, they should be more or less untraceable, especially if the move out of the neighborhood.

Right?

Again, remember Mike didn’t really want to do this a few episodes ago and always seems to have that “Just when I thought I was out, these two boneheads…” look on his face.

ETA, Yeah yeah yeah, I just remembered Mike lost his money to the DEA and that’s why he’s back in, but it still wouldn’t surprise me if he took what he had so far and left town to find a ‘real’ job if he needed to. I just can see him forcing Walt and Jesse to keep cooking.
IIRC he wasn’t worried about them cooking until HIS money was gone. I don’t remember him getting to worked up about the first few people losing their hazard pay.

That’s the “notion” part. Who would even think to try and push a giant truck like that? Again ->

Whether or not Todd was just following orders (implied orders, not explicit) when he shot the kid, none of them can be comfortable with the fact that he did it so easily. Either he’s done it before (or something like it) or he’s really, really ambitious. He’s not exactly a loose cannon, but there’s definitely a screw loose in that guy.

I think the train guys just didn’t have any idea what to do and needed to keep on schedule and the ‘truck driver’ was happy to keep killing time.

Who wouldn’t? Three people could’ve easily pushed a truck like that away from the tracks, assuming that it hadn’t come to stop against the base of an incline.

Well, remember that it was never Mike’s money - it was his granddaughter’s. I imagine that Mike has always operated under the notion that he’s going to be killed in the line of “duty” at some point, and, like Walt, he’s doing it all for his family.

I loved how obviously he (Saul’s guy.. good to see Bill Burr again!) was obviously NOT trying to push the truck.

I feel like this episode has pushed this season into full swing, I bet it’s going to be quite a ride to the “half-season” finale in a couple weeks!

I think Mike will almost certainly kill Todd over this. Yes, Mike is a deeply pragmatic criminal - but he also accepts that there are times in a criminal’s career that you simply have to go to prison. That’s the whole deal with his nine guys, after all - he expects them to do their time quietly, and in exchange, he’ll look after them. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him even say something to Todd like, “If you need to kill a kid to stay out of prison, then you don’t stay out of prison - that’s just how it is.”

I still can’t believe the show went there and had a kid killed. As someone alluded to upthread, they could have easily distracted the kid and made like they were doing something else. My memory is a little fuzzy but I don’t think the kid saw much that would be considered incriminating.
