Breaking Bad 5.11 "Confessions" 8/25/13

Doesn’t seem fair somehow, eh standingwave? Munch and Washoe, interesting reports from the field, thanks.

Because the show’s been on for 5 years but in Breaking Bad time it’s only been like an hour and a half.

Tonight I re-watched all three new episodes with a friend to get her caught up. The waitress in the diner didn’t hear the gang talking. She wasn’t even near the table at that point. We see her approach the table after they stop talking. She didn’t really seem afraid of the customers either. And it occurred to me that Declan’s gang was based in Phoenix. That’s why we saw Todd and friends drive past a New Mexico sign. It establishes they made the hit out of state and are now back home. So Drew’s disappearance might not have been been news in that location. I don’t think anybody is getting caught that way. But this did jump out to me:

Todd calls Walter “Mr. White” a couple of times. Not just on the phone but in front of Uncle Jack and Kenny. And he used Jesse’s name too. So that would at least make it easier for the neo-Nazis to find Walt if they want to.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by this…to identify who he is? They already know who Walt is. They met with him face to face for the 10 guys in 2 minutes hit. “You will do it, they way I want done. That’s why I’m paying you.”

Doesn’t mean they knew his name. It’s not like he was writing them a personal check and they needed to check his ID or anything.

These are actually functional - they slow water coming off the mountain and into Arroyo del Oso. It’s just on the east side of an arterial road, so there’s not a whole lot of skateboarding potential right there anyway. We don’t get a lot of rain, but when we do, water can get moving fast off the mountain, and the slope is particularly steep just there.

Although it must be said, the tableside guacamole is excellent (when the avocados are ripe, anyway).

That’s the thing I kept thinking about during this episode. Everyone, from Walt to Hank to Skyler to Marie, has always said it’s all about family, all the way through the series. Now Hank and Marie are mortal enemies of Walt, Marie and Skyler are permanently estranged, Walt and Skyler are disengaging their kids from Marie and Hank, and Skyler’s connection to Walt is tenuous at best. The family that Walt started out trying to save is blown apart, no matter what.

It’s less than a mile away from my house - and I’ve never seen it looking the way it did at the beginning of the episode. I did notice, when they started shooting in that neighborhood, suddenly everyone’s landscaping got a lot neater.

Walt had no way of knowing whether or not Brock would survive the poisoning, and I seriously doubt he cared that much. When no one’s looking, Walt’s sense of morality doesn’t really reach much past caring about the welfare of his own kids, and I’m starting to wonder how far his concern for them has faded at this point. Walt seems to be getting more and more aware and accepting of the fact that he’s mainly interested in getting and keeping power, not in benefiting his family.

The children have always been his justification for what he’s doing. He cares about them, but it’s in the abstract. The ultimate metaphor for that was when he missed Holly’s birth because of his first big drug deal, but his manipulation of Jr. in this episode was another horrible example.
