Breaking Bad 5.13 "To'hajiilee" 9/8/13

I used to live in Albuquerque and never saw one. I did, however, see it quite often when I lived in Honolulu.

What, are you kidding? All that’s left would be for him to get “Sociopath!” tattooed on his forehead.

He’s being portrayed as a textbook sociopath.

Is the term even used in textbooks anymore? In popular culture it’s now applied so broadly that it doesn’t mean much of anything. There’s not too much you can say about Todd that you can’t say about Gus and Walt. Or maybe even Mike. The difference is that we know those characters pretty well and we don’t know what’s going on in Todd’s head (assuming anything is going on).

We’ve seen oodles of remorse and angst from both Jesse and Walt, but we saw Ricky Hitler smiling at his new tarantula.

Even Gus showed emotion about his deceased lover. Todd doesn’t seem to have feelings about anything.

I wonder if Lydia will use sex to get Todd to do her bidding.

It doesn’t seem like she needs to. Todd is already more than willing to bend over backwards for her.

That’s why I didn’t include Jesse in that list. He’s the only one who seems genuinely tormented about what he’s done. There were times Walt got upset about killing people, especially early in the series. But he always got over it when he needed to. His arrogance allows him to justify anything to himself. It’s gotten to the point that he thinks poisoning a child is something he can explain away. It’s not that I think Todd feels remorse - there’s no evidence of that - but I think it’s worth noting that you do feel differently about a character when you see his inner life. If this were a show about Todd and Walt were a recurring character, how psychotic would Walt look?

Gus didn’t kill Max, though, and think about the sweeping, calculating revenge he took. Gus’ body count dwarfed Walt’s and he had no problem using children in drug dealing and murder. In a lot of ways he was a more effective and methodical version of Walt.

I’m sure there’s a reason they showed that he has the hots for Lydia. Maybe at some point he chooses her over Walt.

This is kind of a grim analogy, but I’m going to give it a shot: when a person has cancer and gets chemotherapy, the chemo often kills nearly all of the cancer cells and it looks like the person is cured. Eventually, though, the patient finds out that some cells survived. This small number of cells wasn’t affected by the treatment in the first place. In time those cells reproduce and the result is a new tumor that is immune to the chemotherapy. Things can get desperate after that. And that’s the Nazis: Walt has wiped out the professionals who came before him because they weren’t prepared for his recklessness and the Nazis are what’s left. They’re relentless and violent, and instead of using Gus’ subtlety or Walt and Jesse’s scheming, they’ll send a bunch of guys with machine guns when it’s over they’ll wipe the blood off their shoes. They’re the next logical step from Walt and they’re an inevitable consequence of what he’s done.

So the Nazis are some sort of experimental cancer treatment found only in Central America, like leeches + drinking orange juice or something?

The Nazis are that surviving, untreatable cancer.

Who’s the shepherd?

Has anybody plugged those GPS coordinates into Google Earth to see what they really are?

I don’t give a fuck enough to actually do it myself.

I wonder how hard it would be to start the rumor that Vince Gilligan buried $3 million there for the first fan with a shovel.

Yes.

[SPOILER]It’s the location of Q studios in Albuquerque, where the show is filmed.

I’m trying to imagine what the outcome of this shootout is going to be. It’s ridiculous to think that Hank and Gomez don’t die…with the firepower the neo-nazis had, they should have both been dead before they even had a chance to scramble for cover behind the SUV Walt is in. But it’s a TV show, so…

Speaking of which, presumably they still want Walt to cook meth for them and it seemed they saw him in the back seat, but they weren’t being too particular about shooting up the SUV! By all rights Walt should be dead now too if this were reality. Obviously we know Walt survives this due to the flash forwarded scenes we’ve already seen.

I also don’t see how Jesse could possibly get away. He opened the door to the 300 and acted like he was about to make a break for it, but thought better of it.

What happens to Huell? Hank and Gomez have left him in a motel room with some DEA mook that doesn’t know what’s going on…how long does he stay there and how long before the DEA agent starts wondering what happened to Hank and Gomez?

I see a difference between Todd on the one hand and Walt and Gus on the other. A total lack of outward emotion. Gus almost pulls that off, but his anger shines through at moments. Walt is over-the-top emotional at times. But Todd? Cool as a cucumber, no matter what. True, we’ve not seen him provoked in such a way that his emotions might shine through, but I think we’re supposed to see him this way. Plus Walt and Gus have some ambition, but Todd? He just wants to follow orders and maybe get to kill some people.

I think it will be Todd or Lydia or both whom Walt goes gunning for, after all his family, even Marie, end up dead.

Todd has that kind of “mold your own” sorta handsome face that’s pretty forgettable. Sick bastard!

[Bolding, underscore, mine]

Did anyone else notice in the shootout in To’hajilee that one of the skinheads was shooting an M-60? In the flash forward people think that Walt bought that M-60 in the trunk.

Maybe not?

Vince Gilligan inserts little details like this for people with too much time on their hands (like me :D).

The Nazis are MRSA.

I really like this analogy. Walt has always been extremely fortunate to deal with criminals who didn’t threaten his family too much and allowed the Whites to live blithely on in their suburban middle-class paradise.

Once each of these DID threaten the Whites, they got eliminated, either by Walt or conveniently by Hank. Tuco turned up at Walt’s house, found family pictures in his wallet, had a killer line about loving to work with family men. What was it? “They have so much collateral.” Something like that. Then Hank shoots him between the eyes. Ditto the Mexican hitmen cousins.

Then Walt worked for Gus the Gentleman Meth Lord who finally ended up threatening Holly: “your infant daughter.” He got a one-way ticket to El Pollo in the sky.

These Nazis don’t give a fuck, though. Killing Walt’s family will be like squashing a bug to them. And we know Uncle Jack already doesn’t like Walt. In all their previous interactions, Todd has been keeping Uncle Jack in check–to me it’s clear he feels nothing but contempt for Walt.

Walt’s not equipped to handle MRSA. These guys don’t respond to antibiotics or reason.

My prediction: the Nazis kill everybody but Walt, and when they uncuff him and take him out of the car he can’t look at the carnage and makes Todd take his hand and lead him through the scene.
Todd realizes that he did a good job of leading Walt and Lydia through really rough scenes and thinks maybe he should do it for a living. He opens a company called “Todd’s Really Rough Escort Service”.
Hilarity ensues.
