Breaking Bad 5.16 "Felina" 9/29/13 SERIES FINALE

Yeah, I think it’s a case of him just not being a murderer. There are lots of people who do bad things, or do things to help bad people, who wouldn’t go so far as to murder another human being. He probably also takes some pride in his job. Consider Walt. Walt has almost certainly done worse things than the disappear-er. Yet Walt would never just murder someone and take their money. He would want to earn it.

Vicullum, I assume that was either shrapnel or a ricochet.

“Optimistic dialectic drives music out of tragedy with the scourge of its syllogisms: that is, it destroys the essence of tragedy, which can be interpreted only as a manifestation and illustration of Dionysian states, as the visible symbolizing of music, as the dream-world of Dionysian ecstasy.”

Nietzsche, The Birth of Tragedy

The M-60 has considerable recoil, especially in that configuration with no gunner to help control it. When a gunner fires a machine gun, it’s in 3-5 round bursts. In this case, the gun was firing in what is called cyclic mode, or at its maximum rate of fire. The recoil caused the gun to buck up and down as it was traversing, so bullets were flying in all directions, especially after the initial traverse that did most of the damage to personnel. There also would have been ricochets.

As for this final episode, I was smiling through much of it because I thought it was nigh on perfectly done. An outstanding series concluded with an outstanding final episode. A brilliant character study. Bravo, Mr. Gilligan.

What everyone else said - really nicely done. The scene with Holly made me cry. Slightly annoying he told Lydia, but I guess otherwise the debate would never end over whether he really poisoned her.

I for one really enjoyed the indications of high living at Chez Nazi. I do believe Uncle Jack was sporting some primo cashmere, which made me  :smack: :D. And of course the massage chair.

There’s no wrong way to kill a Nazi, but it occurs to me that Jack’s death kind of paralleled Hank’s. After Hank was shot, Walt tried to use his money to convince Jack to let him go, and Jack killed Hank anyway. After Jack was shot, he tried to use Walt’s money to convince Walt to let him go, and Walt killed him anyway. Although Jack probably didn’t have too long anyway.

Of course it had to end with a song from BADfinger, right? What other choices were there? Bad Company, maybe?

Bad Religion’s cover of “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue?”

Bad cover.

Minor quibble: Drew Sharp’s parents will never know what happened to their boy. Sad.

Breaking Sad

I like it, but to each his own.

The only off note was spelling out the ricin poisoning to the slower viewers. The coffehouse scene with Lydia asking for more Stevia and then the camera focusing on it being poured into the cup was practically sledgehammer obvious compared to Jesse’s realization that Walt poisoned Brock because Huell lifted the ricin from him.

To then add actual exposition explaining it later in the episode turned it from comparatively unsubtle to reminiscent of the Dexter parodies of that Jesse-Huell reveal. At least they didn’t have Walt spell out to her that there is no cure for ricin poisoning.

Otherwise a great end to a great show.

There really was a mole, and not only did we never find out who it was, neither did the DEA.

Gilligan discussed this point at the time. He said that in real life, moles often never get identified.

Wait…am I thinking of Homeland? I think I am.

What really sucks is that I have some amazing predictions for next week’s episode…

Heck, they shoulda just gone with Dylan.

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun
Crying like a fire in the sun
Look out the saints are comin’ through
And it’s all over now, Baby Blue

Jess knows, and is free. It would be totally in character for him to anonymously send a letter to the FBI or something along those lines.

Good point. I feel a little better now.

An alternate ending, maybe?

And the SD card is probably still in the camcorder in the Nazis’ clubhouse, which is now crawling with cops.

As for Walt spilling the beans to Lydia about what was wrong with her, that’s just part of the torture. If you go to the hospital with some sort of mystery ailment the doctors will do everything they possibly can to get to the bottom of it. All the way up until the time you die, you always have hope, because you don’t know what’s wrong with you and you assume that modern medicine will prevail and save you. But if you go in and tell them you’ve been poisoned with ricin, they may be honest enough to say, “we’ll do everything we can, but there’s no antidote.”

ok well I guess I’m the only one that didn’t like that ending.

all series long we were heading towards a Walt / Jesse conflict and when we get one its just meh and over in seconds. They should have swapped the order around, had Hank wipe out the Nazi’s in Ozymandias and have Walt’s final conflict with Hank tonight.

No sir I don’t like it.

I kinda felt sorry for that green cop show immediately following BB. That was a hard act for anything to follow.
