Rather than resurrect a thread from over a year ago, I have to comment on something that is bothering me a great deal at the moment.
I’m halfway through Season 4, and Hank has just aired his suspicions to APD and DEA regarding Gus. Admittedly, his evidence is fairly circumstantial, and Gus has reasonable responses. But why has no mention been made by either of the law enforcement agencies regarding the two very violent hijackings of Pollo Hermanos trucks, each with multiple dead bodies? Surely that would point toward something unusual? Or are we to assume that it happened in other states and hasn’t attracted attention of the Feds or the local APD? :dubious:
It’s been a while since I’ve seen season 4, but I thought those hijackings happened down in Mexico, where they were being driven to the cartel down there? I could be wrong…
It’s been driving me crazy too, and I still haven’t figured out the answer, if there even is one. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the biggest plot hole in the entire series, and the only serious one. You can’t just leave a truck riddled with hundreds of bullet holes by the side of the road and expect nobody to notice it. So they (Gaff and his buddies) must have concealed them somehow, but how? You can’t just drive one along the highway, either. The only explanation I can think of is that they carefully picked stopping locations where the trucks could be immediately driven off the highway a sufficient distance to conceal them. Then they either left them there, or went back later and disassembled them.
I suppose it’s also conceivable that some piece of clever bookkeeping and some destruction of evidence left burned out trucks that could not be traced back to Los Pollos Hermanos. Not sure how plausible that is.
Oh, duh—I’m not thinking. Mike dispatched Gaff’s henchmen on the first attempt. So whatever was done with the first truck was expedited by Mike. Which just kind of begs more questions. Let’s say Mike realizes that he’s gotta get this hunk of truck carcass off the road. So he drives off into the desert and leaves it on BLM land somewhere where nobody will notice it. It’s still got precious cargo on it, though. Not to mention Mike’s DNA—enough to give the authorities an earful. So somebody had to get that out of the truck, at least. Who took care of that and how?
I just figured that the cartel dudes cleaned things up reasonably well - maybe just drove the truck into the middle of the desert where it remains undiscovered to this very day. Gus would have a pretty good idea what happened.
They were trying to send a message to Gus, not expose him to US law enforcement. Indeed, if Gus was suddenly arrested then there is a chance that his wonderful 5-star meth chef(s) would be arrested as well. Then the cartel would never get a chance to cook the blue themselves.
[spoiler]But Mike didn’t meet him until Season 5. Junkyard Guy is an associate of Badger’s Uncle; it was Walt and Jesse who introduced Mike to him when they were having fun with magnets.
Most likely neither. If the trucks were simply left on the side of the road, the first law enforcement officer to happen by might (dare I say ‘probably’) notice and take some sort of action to document its existence. From there it gets more complicated, but the upshot of the whole affair is that the local DEA could conceivably catch wind of it. Maybe not by 6:00 p.m. that evening, but certainly by the time they repeat the nightly news at 11:00. Worst case scenario, full disclosure is delayed until the following morning, when the DEA agent in question learns about it from his coworker who is reading the newspaper when the agent arrives at the office.
Of course it is, but that’s the crux of this thread—what happened to the trucks? The very fact that they never came to the attention of authorities is prima facie evidence that they were disposed of somehow. But you don’t need to be David Copperfield to achieve this. It’s likely that Gus instructed his drivers to use lesser roads as much as possible to reduce the probability of contact with law enforcement. So both trucks were already out of the way of prying eyes when they were initially stopped. Gaff certainly didn’t seem to be too concerned about passing motorists. He and his buddies took the time to casually eat the driver’s lunch before wrapping up the assignment. After that the only conceivable explanation is that they simply drove the truck a few miles or so perpendicular to the road and left it there. If they really wanted to be anal about it, they could have driven it into a natural watershed and then come back later with heavy machinery and partially buried it. If it were on public lands, it could be decades before anybody stumbled across it, if ever.
Well, I think this is the most likely answer (and no, the show never addresses this question). Pollos operates in several states all over the southwest. I assume that Mike probably disposes of the bodies, and after that, one or two damaged trucks aren’t going to attract much notice besides local law enforcement.
If this is bothering you, oh boy, brother, you’ve got some trouble ahead (with regards to plot holes).
