Breaking Bad 3.8: I See You

Jeez, the tension on this show is going to give heart failure.

You got that right.

I suppose Mike was able to get to the cousin with the help of a cop looking the other way, because wouldn’t his room be guarded? The scene where he crawled out of bed was the creepiest thing I’ve seen since – I don’t know when, maybe ever.

Walt needs to work on his game if he’s gonna play with Gus. At least now he knows the kind of guy he’s dealing with and what he’s capable of.

Actually, he doesn’t. Too bad he did see the youtube video of the Mexican massacre!

At the very least he’s a bit more aware of how “all-knowing” Gus is and that he has to be more transparent in his day to day dealings to keep Gus on his good side. I’m thinking this was his one “get out of jail free card” for lying.

That’s what I meant – (thanks, Joey P). Besides that, Walt has to suspect that Gus is behind the cousin’s death in the hospital.

Marie’s statement “We’re all family” was a nice counterpoint to the earlier episode with Tio and the cousins. It makes me wonder if Hank, Marie, and even Skyler might stand up for Walt when the time comes. I was surprised that Walt stayed at the hospital and didn’t make an excuse to leave. He had to be worried about leaving Jesse alone in the lab.

And how funny was Jesse?

Yup - I confess, I doubt that I would have come up with that particular use for the exhaust system.

I had assumed that Walt knew that Gus knew about him and Hank. So he would, of course, be perfectly understanding of the situation. Until the phone conversation where Walt made up an excuse for the delay.
Also, if Walt made any excuse to disappear for more then an hour or two to do family stuff, he knew that would have messed up everything he’s started to rebuild with Skylar. I believe that if he had to chose, Walt would chose Skylar over the money.

Can I just say I love this show so much?

Lots of interesting Gus stuff this episode. I couldn’t figure out why Walt was lying about the delayed batch, but I forgot that Walt was trying to hide his brother in law being a DEA agent. I guess that makes sense. Still, I’d be loathe to lie to Gus - I’d at least say “a critical family matter came up” or something rather than making stuff up.

Gus taking out the Mexican cartel guy is probably the most interesting thing that happened this episode. How long was that planned for? Did he just assume that the cartel would figure out he gave the brothers permission and he was just acting pre-emptively in self defense, or is this something he’s been planning for a while, and creating his own supply of meth is part of a greater plan to increase his power? For all I know, he’s just a distributor for what the cartel makes - but maybe Walt and his lab gives him the opportunity to become independent of the cartel, and much of what we’ll be seeing from here on out is Gus vs the cartel. That would certainly be an interesting direction to go in.

Tonight’s episode was not as pulse-pounding as the previous two episodes. Yeah, the hospital scene with the crawling cousin was creepy, but Walter was never in any danger. It was still a nice episode that moved the storyline along. It’s pretty obvious now that it was Gus who engineered the tip-off to Hank since he’s certainly benefiting from it, all part of his big plans to wipe out some competition. It also looks to me that there’s a mole inside the DEA and the most obvious suspect is Hank’s former boss. Someone had to give Mike access to rub out the surviving cousin. Also, this section chief is sure getting a lot of airtime lately. I bet he’s in Gus’ pocket.

Especially the blood trail- like a wounded animal crawling out of the road.

Gus is such a weird blend of Steve Urkel and Michael Corleone. Perhaps next week he’ll kill the heads of the Colombian cartels with poisioned chicken and then say “Did I do that?” I still like him, but he’s definitely capable of great evil, and I wonder if the time he spent with Walt’s family may have been to get leverage on Walt who can easily come clean and destroy him at this point- he doesn’t even need to live to testify if he shows them the lab. Meanwhile I’m coming to like Jesse less and less- I know he’s lost his girlfriend and had the bejeezus beaten out of him in recent weeks but he needs a humility booster.

I loved Jesse’s blow-up suit. And how proud he was of it, until he got caught.

I definitely think that Gus has been plotting taking out the Mexican cartel dudes for a while. SenorBeef, I think you’re right that Walt and his cooking skills gave Gus the opportunity to break away from just being a distributor for the cartel. I was initially surprised by his lenience with Walt’s missed deadline, but his plan was in motion to break ties with his supply chain. Gus needs Walt.

I don’t know that there needs to be a mole in the DEA office, nivlac. Free food is an excellent distraction in itself. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Gus had someone working for him in the DEA.

Especially since Gus’ chicken seems to be genuinely tasty - it gets good reviews from characters on the show. That’s a neat bit of character for Gus, actually - it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that he’d put real effort into making sure his “legitimate” product was of good quality.

Are we sure the brother didn’t die because of his injuries? He was in pretty bad shape. I didn’t pick up on anything else going on there.

There’s a shot of Mike getting rid of something nearby just after everyone’s gathered outside the dead cousin’s room.

Gotcha… I missed that on first viewing.

And what was it he was getting rid of? I kept rewinding but couldn’t quite make it out. Dropping a syringe into a biohazard box or something? But we saw it in the background, past the side of Walt’s face, before the closeup shot and it just looked sort of like one of those wall-mounted file-folder holders that’s next to every door in a hospital.

That’s what it looked like to me. Those sharps containers are wall-mounted.

I think Jesse’s assholish behavior is a defense mechanism, but yeah, he wasn’t very likable in this episode. It could have been worse though – he could have gone ahead and cooked with Walt instead of telling him about Hank.

Halfway through, I was expecting Gus to use Walt’s access to the hospital to take out the assassin guy. I’m not sure if the writers didn’t think of it or if they have better plot than that planned.
