Breaking News: The West coast is on Fire

AirNow is reporting us at 300 (Hazardous) in Portland.

watching ABC news this evening, says the smoke is now in New York City, so there’s part of your wish come true. Wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for the other part to come true though.

Hey, holding my breath is a great idea! Smoke is less of a problem if I don’t inhale it, right? Let’s see if I can hold it until the fires go out. … nope. Rats.

We had a hazy sunset on our balcony close enough to the White House to have heard Duhbya’s impromptu fireworks display for President Vicente Fox. I’m sure the current occupant didn’t notice and/or didn’t give a shit.

Had to do an errand, had the radio on in the car, and caught the weather report in that form; wasn’t sure what I’d heard the first time but it came around again pretty soon: yup indeed, they said not ‘high clouds’ but ‘high smoke’. Upstate NY.

Can’t smell it though, at least not yet; nor are we trying to breathe a choking cloud. So we’re not in any sense experiencing the same thing as people closer to the fires.

That’s honestly shocking. I have to assume it was a light rain with not much wind, but still…

I hope things improve for you soon. The instant the AQI dropped below 100 for me last night I opened a window by my bed even though the air quality was objectively still piss-poor. Just couldn’t take that stifling, muggy evening another minute. It’s truly an oppressive situation and mine hasn’t been nearly as bad as yours, despite us breaking records down here for most shit air quality days in a row.

It wasn’t light either time, but it didn’t last more than 30 minutes. We need rainy weather strong enough to make it over the mountains. I have to admit, I’m discouraged.

A storm front has pretty much cleared the air on the Oregon coast, and it’s heading this way by Thursday/Friday. Sunny skies are actually forecast for Sunday, which will be a welcome relief.

I’ll believe that when it happens. They’ve been teasing us with promises of rain for a while now and it never shows up.

I live in Hillsboro and perhaps it’s a bit less thick over here. I’ve been doing my usual bike rides (about 25 miles, 2 1/2 hours) every day except one and haven’t have any problem breathing while doing so. Maybe I’m damaging my lungs without realizing it, but I’d think there’d be some kind of effect. Today I went up to Skyline. Last time I did that (Wednesday, I think) I had to turn around because there was a downed power line across the road. I went to a different part of that road today with no problem.

I started smoking tobacco when I was 17 and quit last year (at 62). As a lifelong smoker, I hadn’t noticed how bad my lungs worked until I quit. Here in central AZ, the smoke and haze has been bad enough that my lungs feel like I never quit with the tobacco.

My nephew, who lives in Eugene, Oregon, called and talked to my mother, his grandmother, today. He says the air is really awful up there, and is not sure he’s going to be able to take a scheduled plane flight to Ogden, Utah, tomorrow.

As of right now, both air quality sites I check say air quality is good in Sacramento (solidly in the green) on AirNow’s scale. A certain cat is enjoying some patio time right now. She’s been sulking because I wouldn’t let her out into AQI in the red range.

I’m in southern Ontario, Canada, thousand of miles from the wildfires, and yesterday’s weather report attributed the haze to high-altitude smoke from those fires, carried by the jet stream. According to other reports, the smoke has now reached Europe.

The damage usually shows up later in life as COPD or emphysema. You’re playing a risky game.

The air quality is “down” to 222 (very unhealthy) here in Portland according to AirNow.

I just walked the dogs, and it still smells oppressively like smoke. But visibility is slightly better. After several days of 400-600+, it’s easy to forget that 200 still sucks.

I’ve never been looking forward to “bad” weather so much.

Yes in my area east of Sac it was 70 when I woke-up this morning and immediately opened all the windows in the house - something not done for at least 2 weeks. I want to get some fresher air in here - the recycled air inside was getting so stuffy. Right now we are in the mid 60s, so dropping!! I hope it lasts!

That’s what we did yesterday afternoon, and I even got to walk. The sky was reasonably blue. My AQI was in the high 40s.
Now I have to catch up on the outside stuff I was putting off.

And it has climbed back up to 315(Hazardous)

We’re sitting on a 166 down here next to the El Dorado fire. Most of the smoke is going up and over to Europe rather than wafting down into the valleys. Couple that with the massive amount of ragweed pollen in the air and my sinuses are trashed.
