Are we going for “best breakup song for wallowing in your own self pity?” or “best fuck you breakup song!”

Cuz for the former it’s “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins.

The latter, there are many I like.
“Song for the Dumped” by Ben Folds Five
“You Oughtta Know” Alanis Morisette

I really like this verse by Chance the Rapper in the Action Bronson song “Baby Blue”:

I hope you get a paper cut on your tongue
From a razor in a paper cup
I hope every soda you drink already shaken up
I hope your dreams dry like raisins in the baking sun
I hope your titties are all saggy in your early twenties
I hope there’s always snow in your driveway
I hope you never get off Fridays
And you work at a Friday’s that’s always busy on Fridays
I hope you win the lottery and lose your ticket
I hope it’s Ben and Socrates poop all up in your kitchen
I hope the zipper on your jacket get stuck
And your headphones short, and your charger don’t work
And you spill shit on your shirt
I hope your tears don’t hurt, and I can smile in your face
Cut my losses, how Delilah changed my locks to a fade
I hope you happy, I hope you happy
I hope you ruined this shit for a reason, I hope you happy (Igh!)

I’ve always favored this subtle hint that maybe we should take a break…

It has to be Dusty. I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself.

And what’s more, it has to be Dusty.

Great example, though there’s a fine line between breakup and heartbreak song, and this one skirts the line.

A trio of Rolling Stones breakup songs

The singer character is doing the breaking up:
Angie
But Angie, Angie
Ain’t it time we said goodbye? Yeah

The singer character is getting dumped and is in denial about it:
Wild Horses
Graceless lady, you know who I am
You know I can’t let you slide through my hands

The Grim Reaper does the breaking up:
Paint it Black
I could not foresee this thing
Happening to you

I’ve never thought of “Paint it Black” like that, but I love that track.

It never really occured to me to be a break-up song, I associate it with a TV series about Vietnam, “Tour of Duty” which, inevitably, depicts senseless death.

Grim Reaper indeed.

Well, I admit that it’s a bit of a stretch as a breakup song, since as mentioned it’s the Grim Reaper doing the breaking up. But I already thought of two Stones breakup songs, and I wanted to do a ‘rule of three’ list.

I suppose I could have gone with another ‘in denial’ Stones breakup song-- “Time Is on My Side”.
Now you always say
That you want to be free
But you’ll come running back…

I’ll grant you that one, for sure.

Old 97s - Salome One of my favorite break-up songs ever.

Side note: in that guitar solo, does anyone else hear a symphony?

Probably superfluous nitpick: that one was a cover.

It was???

I have a collection of more than 300 cover songs, I consider myself as a cover song nerd… and you just brutally covered me with shame.

I hate to break it you, yes it is a cover. Though a cover of a B-side that went nowhere until the Stones made it their own.
