Breaking up... it's easy to do

Continuing this thread hijack in a more appropriate place

with this Violent Femmes track

I already mentioned my fondness for breakup songs by Dylan, and “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” and “Idiot Wind” have been mentioned as breakup songs that really sting, but I also have a soft spot for a more melancholic approach. So here’s one of my favorites, Doug Sahm’s “Give Back The Key To My Heart”. Original version and the great cover by Uncle Tupelo with Doug himself singing the second verse.

Best:

Worst:

Composed by a condescending, bitter, and un-self aware Cat Stevens after breaking up with Patti D’Arbanville; a Warhol Factory alumnus whom modern audiences might recognize as Loraine from the Sopranos and Bobby Axelrod’s mother from Billions.

Or slightly older audiences as George Harrison’s wife which his best friend Eric Clapton stole from him after having sung about her on “Layla” and “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” (and later, “Wonderful Tonight”.) She must be one of the most successful muses in Rock, if you just count the songs written and sung about her.

Nope, that was a different Patti.
Pattie Boyd - Wikipedia

I actually love that song. I had no idea of the back-story. But having been brought into teenage marijuana-fueled consciousness, Cat (now Yusuf Islam, of course), Dylan etc I was only barely aware of the story behind it.

Damn, now I’m embarrassed, and a new universe has branched for me (think Mandela effect). Up to your post, I would have sworn that Patti D’Arbanville and Patti Boyd were the same person, only that her name had changed sometimes through marriage or adoption or whatever. It’s good to have the Dope to get rid of such misconceptions.

No need! Thank you for giving me an opportunity to show that I know something.

Don’t even get me started on Patty Smyth vs Patti Smith.

Just to copy over two songs from the other thread:

One More Minute - Weird Al Yankovic

Funny How Time Slips Away - Willie Nelson

Yeah, that’s also very tricky, though I got that down. Wasn’t there a Doper who only found out on this board that Jerry Lee Lewis and Jerry Lewis are two different persons?

Thank God And Greyhound (She’s Gone) - Roy Clark

Kristin Chenoweth - “If (You Hadn’t, But You Did)”

Here we go
Weird Al Yankovic’s One More Minute

ETA: Shakes fist at Gyrate. “Stay off my lawn!”

We already have the ultimate break up mix tape thread.

May I submit Mason Williams’ Sweet Someone (not to be confused with the Don Ho song), which includes the immortal quatrain:

You done stomped on my heart
You tore it all apart
Darlin’, you just sorta
Mashed on my aorta!

Nice rhyming pair :+1:

Also, I believe I once read somewhere, ‘Something in the way she moves’, and ‘The way you look tonight’.

50 ways to leave your Lover.
