Breaking up... it's easy to do

No, this thread is the first time I have posted on the subject.

I could fire up my old harddrive, but it belongs in a tower, runs on a Windows file system and I would have to do some serious backflipping computer acrobatics to get to to work with my Mac.

Maybe one day I will return to Windows boxes, and I will see what I can retrieve.

But I think my collection is going to the grave with me.

Cue, Bob Dylan, covered by Nick Cave:

Thanks again.

I pour the drinks and crush the flowers.

First song I thought of: Todd Rundgrens’ The Last Ride (performed with Daryl Hall with some smokin’ lead guitar by Todd)

Garbage, “Cup of Coffee” (2001)

If you want a great cover of Dolly Partons “almost at breakup point” song, and you like both country and West African music, then.. my friends:

I am fortunate to be long-term friends with a bunch of the band members.

(God, I dislike Discourse in so many ways. Sorry, you will probably have to copy/paste)

Goodbye by Steve Earle. More a song about drifting apart than a formal breakup, but if anything the sadder for that.

This caused me to flash on a song about a very, very permanent breakup:

I was waiting for someone to mention “Song for the Dumped.”

An absolutely fantastic breakup song.

Also, there’s Todd’s “The Very Last Time”

Beatles:
“Long and Winding Road”
“Hide Your Love Away”
“Don’t Pass Me By” {always thought that was some hokey country cover, but nope - Ringo’s first song he wrote)
“I’ll Follow the Sun”
“I’m Looking Though You”
“Run For Your Life”
“For No One”
“Another Girl”
“Girl”
“No Reply”
“Ticket To Ride”
“Yesterday”
would “Sexy Sadie” qualify?

I’ll bet the Stones have a few

Allegedly not about a former lover, but about Brian Epstein having to hide his homosexuality.

Also not about a lover, but Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Their only great breakup song I can come up with is “Angie”, most of their others are just mean put downs of exes like “Yesterday’s Papers” or “Out Of Time”.

ETA: another great breakup song they did was “Love In Vain”, but of course that’s a Robert Johnson cover.

The Violent Femmes, “Fat” is a favorite, though it might not please everyone. A kind of incel anthem before there were incels.

Any external drive you can plug in will work on a Mac or a PC … heck, might be worth it to buy a portable hard drive (4 TB for $99 at Best Buy), (8TB for 149 and so on).
Worth every penny for the hit of Napster Nostalgia…

I need to pull out some old drives and see what’s on there (in the last days of file-sharing, I’d search for “Duets” and got some great harmonizing, from artists I’d never heard before).

This one holds a special place in my heart:

15–23 June, 1975, the happiest week of my life.

I think that’s just keyboards supporting the solo.

But I like the song and will check out the band.

If you don’t think Paint It Blacks works, the happy, sunny Turtles also called on the Grim Reaper.

I think my joke may have been a little too subtle.
