1. What’s the difference between a hub and a switch? Between a switch and a router? Between a switch with VLANs and a router? Discuss.
They operate at different levels of the OSI (Open System Interconnection) model of a network:
A HUB is a multi-port repeater, operating at Layer 1 of the OSI model (the Physical Layer). What enters through one port is reproduced identically at all the other ports, with no switching intelligence.
A SWITCH has some packet-fowarding intelligence, usually operating at Layer 2 of the OSI model (the Data Link Layer). It can send a broadcast signal to all ports, but can also send specific packets out via the relevant port to a specified recipient based on the MAC address. It can also use filtering to allow or block traffic depending on the identity of the source.
A SWITCH can have one or more Virtual Local Area Networks) (VLANs) set by the admin to allow groups of devices (each connected to a port) to communicate with other members in the same VLAN, while disallowing communication between the different VLANs.
HUBS and SWITCHES are invisible to the computers connected to them.
A ROUTER operates at Layer 3 of the OSI model, and uses network addresses (such as IP addresses, which I’m using now!) to determine packet forwarding. Since it has to inspect the data packet, there is always a slight delay in forwarding through a router (whereas a hub or switch can operate at near “wire-speed”). However, routers are extremely flexible and can allow or disallow communication between a large combination of different networks, such as different VLANs (cf the switch-with-VLANs described above). If you need Network Address Translation (NAT), you’re in the market for a router.

A Knight of Columbus is wearing a purple cape and chapeau, and carrying a white-handled sword. What can you tell me about him?
The purple cape and chapeau show that he is the current Commander of the Color Corps for a local assembly. The white-handled sword is used by current (and former) Faithful Navigators, so this shows that he used to be a Faithful Navigator, the elected chief executive of a local assembly (a higher post than CCC, so he’s taking things a little easier now).

Phooey. I thought for sure that that answer was wrong. Must ponder. . . .
Hmmm… let’s try again, changes in red while adding some new explanations. I’m going back to my original answer for the bride, and fishing for half-points in the others.
If you need Network Address Translation (NAT), you’re in the market for a router.**

Antonius Block - 50 and the win!
You needed to debunk the notion that Travis named his boat after a broken toilet…
Congrats!
Woohoo! This is my 500th post, too, so that goes double! Having just watched 5 time champ on Jeopardy!, I feel I have to say:
[Sean Connery on SNL]
The day is mine, TreBricker!
[/Sean Connery]
[no offence intended!]
You really do a great job on these, Bricker, but I usually miss them until it’s too late because I don’t check MPSIMS very often.
I find your Challenges hugely addictive. I first looked at this one after a few answers had been given, thought “well of course I knew that!”, then looked back at the questions, saw a dozen or so that I could add, and thought about doing a quick post with about 20 answers. At that point I could have walked away…
But NOOOOO! The rationalization of not wanting to do other peoples’ work for them kicked in, and I was lost, because from then on a WIN was the only acceptable result. I’m normally fairly mild-mannered, but…
I’ll post later this evening or tomorrow with a breakdown of what was “already known” vs what was Googled and Wikipedia’d. For now, I just want to say that I’m going to waive my right to the $25 Amazon.com gift certificate. I suppose I could use it to buy Curing Cancer for Dummies and thereby benefit humanity, but I’d probably get the recipe wrong and unleash the Apocalypse.
There are many Dopers for whom I would happily pay the subscription, but none that I specifically know who have expressed their own inability to pay, and it might seem rude to presume. Perhaps if anyone reading this is – or knows of – a candidate, they could post the username here?
I’m aware that you don’t want this hanging for too long, Bricker, so I’ll give a “timeout default”, which may end up being my choice anyway. I remember various posts of yours in which you discuss charitable donations, and I trust your judgement (just no political donations, since that’s an area on which we don’t agree!). If you want to just add $25 to another contribution, that’ll be fine by me. If it’s to the American Heart Association, that would be perfect, but I trust your judgement in any case.
Once again, my chapeau (albeit not purple) is off to you, Bricker!
The American Heart Association does great work, no question about it, but if you’re leaving the ball in my court I’d like to suggest KOVAR, an organization run by the Knights of Columbus and dedicated to helping mentally challenged men, women, and children. KOVAR funds are used to provide grants and zero-interest mortgage loans to organizations that assist the mentally challenged, such as vocational centers and group homes - facilities that permit people in need of such to live as independent a life as possible.
Next month, the Knights are gearing up for a huge fund-raising drive, and this would be a wonderful way to stash an extra $25 in the kitty…
Congrats - you did a great job!
A donation to KOVAR will be perfect, bricker.
It looks as though they do really good work. I know that you’re an active member of the Virginia KofC, and I’ve learnt a little bit more about the Knights thanks to Question #43. Mental health issues are close to my own heart due to family history, so KOVAR seems a very appropriate place for the prize money to end up.
In addition, no-one has come forward to suggest a Doper to sponsor for next year’s subscription (it may be just my extreme threadkilling talent that’s responsible for this), and they’ve had their chance!
So, go for it with KOVAR!
Mundane Pointless Stuff #1: I like how the KOVAR logo doesn’t ignore the Virginia part of the DelMarVa peninsula (for those unfamiliar with VA geography, this is the part that looks like a claw scratching at a mountain on the right side of the map), in contrast to so many cartographical representations of the Old Dominion. Chincoteague and Assateague are part of VA too!
Mundane PointlessStuff #2: My Dopername refers to a Knight (albeit fictional and pre-Columbus), so chivalrous charities are always cool.
I’m still going to post (as promised) a breakdown of which answers I knew, and which I had to search for, but may I ask two quick post-quiz questions myself?
Do you award half-points in Bricker Challenges? At some point, I had convinced myself that you did, and that my 49/50 was due to having two questions half-right. What’s the skinny on this?
Were you accepting both “Brown Noise” and “Pink Noise” for #26? At one point, your feedback had given both jmizzou and me 49 points, and the only difference in our answer sets was in the noise color (neither of us had yet explained the “Busted Flush”). Was this just an oversight on your part, or were you allowing both Brown and Pink?
Thanks!
Great!
We have councils on the Eastern Shore, and travelling to that area from where I live is a bit of a challenge – either south an hour to get on Rt 301 and then back northeast over the 301 bridge, or north into Maryland, across the Bay Bridge, and then south. There have been times during that trip that I gritted my teeth and WISHED we didn’t have an Eastern Shore!
I used to, but it was making my brain explode. The current practice is that a question may have multiple elements (TRAVIS MCGEE and BUSTED FLUSH=POKER) but all must be present to win the point.
Allowed both. I wrote the question from memory, and was thinking white noise/pink noise. After I saw the brown noise answer, I Googled it and discovered a whole range of “colored” noises and constructions that I didn’t remember - or never knew in the first place. (I did both lighting and sound design in dinner theater work, long ago, but learned ‘on the job’ with little formal training in either area). It appearing that the brown noise/pink noise answer was arguably correct, I gave credit for that answer as well as the one I originally expected.
