There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the behavior she experienced. If she was randomly ganged up on with insults by strangers in REAL LIFE maybe that’d be cause for feeling threatened or abused. This is a message board. I’ll probably never meet her, and she will probably never meet me in her entire life. And if by some chance accident of fate we do meet we won’t recognize each other as fellow Straight Dopers.
Then I suppose every single one of us who frequent The Pit should be banned because this message board has a policy against “being a jerk”. In fact, the entire BBQ pit should be abolished since this forum is filled with feeding frenzy threads like this.
I read it. For the standards of this message board, we are civil. If she was in a town meeting or some other real life gathering and she experienced the same behavior as here it would be a completely different story. Here it’s ok to metaphorically descend upon a poster like a pack of ferocious wolves.
Now that I think about it, it’s not neccesary. The point has already been made in spades. This thread probably will die a quiet death real soon as it sinks to the bottom of the page and finally into the graveyard of old bygone threads.
Not to speak for lissener, but the expectation of considerate behavior he referred to was when she was still in the GQ thread. People began to give her a hard time then, and once she showed that such treatment bothered her this Pit thread and its concomitant feeding frenzy began. You are taking one comment lissener made about conduct in the GQ thread and another he made regarding behavior in the Pit thread and treating them both as though they occurred here.
Besides, you’re a little late with all this; it’s all all been said before. Don’t you think it’s about time to let this thing die?
I saw nothing wrong with the GQ thread either. They were attacking her attitudes (from an objective viewpoint, her fears were unreasonable) and not her personally. And yes, it is time to let this thread die a quiet death.
The problem with shaming people for participating in a pile-on is that it skews the thread in the other direction. This thread started out with an overwhelming number of people flaming brightpenny for her actions in the other thread. By now, it’s gotten to the point where agreeing with this makes you a piler-on, so the thread is reduced to hugs for brightpenny and people who are increasingly being cast as gang-raping jerks. At what point are you people to be shamed for piling on Excalibre?
For the record, I think brightpenny behaved ridiculously in the GQ thread and was not piled-on in any way until after she grossly exaggerated her treatment in that GQ thread, at which point she enjoyed a well-deserved pitting where she was beaten to a pulp but survived to laugh it off. Great jarb, brightpenny. My opinion regarding your question is that you should stick around and keep the name. Few (if any) others will drag this history to other threads, and those that do will be thumped by the mods for being jerks. Enjoy the SDMB.
We might get less newcomers who might not have read the entire frickin’ week’s worth of posts in all 4 threads, if people would stop making references to it such as in this thread ! (beginning with post #31 in this example). There, they’re calling the abhorrent term gang-rape the “new catchphrase” and it even derails that thread.
bright penny if you were bothered by the references in the other thread, I’d have suggested using the report this post, vs. bumping this thread. of course, since you’ve changed your location in your profile to make a reference to this thread, I suspect you’re not all that bothered.
Yes, really. Please tell me that you were able to notice the sarcasm in that post you dug up. I’m also interested in the process by which you discovered that post, but the latter is something I find a little bit disturbing.
