The only thing she seems to be guilty of is being a bit thin skinned, and a choice of words by some found to be a little over the top. And for this she gets called a loathsome bitch. In answer to the OP in the original thread (which is closed), no you are not the only person to ask the question but you can be encouraged that the CDC report that the handlers are “to contact their supervisors before handling anything that appears hazardous within the baggage.”

This site confirms that for sanitary reasons:

Bag the items inside your luggage – TSA handlers who go through the contents in your bag change gloves just once an hour. Although the items in your bag may be clean, you don’t know what else they may be handling. Using packing containers or even Ziploc bags keeps items organized and germ-free.

If you doubt that the handler has avoided handling other people’s stuff ask him/her to change gloves or offer to wait until they do.

For sonme reason this thread – or more accurately, brightpenny herself – has resonated deeply with me. I just spent a fair anount of time looking at the posts brightpenny has made since she came here and I have seen nothing – and I mean absolutely nothing – even remotely self-obsessed, shrill, shrieking, or harpy-like in any of her posts. On the contrary, she seems like a very nice, pleasant, helpful, encouraging, horny ( ) and all-around cool woman. I was glad to see that she is apparenmtly less of an Internet neophyte than I originally thought and that she seems to be at home navigating the various forums here and joining in on some of the inside jokes – “penis ensues”, for example – unmique to the Doper conmnmunmity. This gives me encouragement that she will stick around and continue to contribute in the same way she has up to now.

I join with John Carter of Mars in saying the behavior toward her here – at least until recently – has been shameful. I, too, found myself for the very first time feeling embarrased and ashamed to be part of this community, and I’m very glad to see that the tide has turned and that most of the posters here recently recognize this thread for the ridiculously viscious and uncalled for attack that was. I hope that brightpenny will be able to see that these posters are more typical of the Doper community than the likes of Excalibre and his cadre of like-minded bullies.

A relative newcomer posts a thread with a reasonable question in good faith, and uses a rather over-heated simile in doing so: being called on it with all manner of insults, gets flustered and defends herself. A mean-spirited pile-on ensues, with every man and his dog jostling for position to to goad her - with a few honourable exceptions: take a bow, Starving Artist.

OK, she used an unfortunate simile, and she’s not used to the occasional rough-and-tumble around here: does it honestly show us in our best light to line up and kick the shit out of her? What does that achieve, apart from a feeling of smug self-satisfaction at being part of the in-crowd bullying the new kid? Why not just a measured, “You’re new here, but actually, that simile was a little over-heated and liable to cause offence - I’d suggest dialling it down a notch until you get the hang of things around these parts.”

The more I read of this, the more I think there’s some doubleplus ungood ganging up going on here; I just want to be clear that I’m not trying to insult brightpenny. I think her simile was very ill-chosen, but that’s it. Comments about she needs to grow a pair and so forth are not really helpful, in my opinion. Why not? Because they distract from my point . My point is that folks shouldn’t trivialize rape by using it in similes for things that are less bad.

I personally think that’s an important enough point that it ought not get lost in a sea of insults.

As for piling onto Excalibre, LHoD, I’m of the opinion he deserves it. He’s *not * thin-skinned. He’s showed he can certainly handle it. AND…I know he’s been responsible for at least one other meltdown in the past for the same reason, jumping all over a poster when they were clearly in an emotional state.

I’m glad to see **brightpenny’s ** not posting in the Pit, anymore. I don’t like it either, so I limit my time here myself. That doesn’t mean I’d want everyone to stop flaming, just that I realize it’s not a good fit for me. My main complaint was the attitude in GQ.

Anyway, I also think we should just let this thread die a quiet death.
