Bringing BACK a Monarchy

I’m not sure if I can phrase this question without sounding too vague, but I’ll give it a try.

Are there currently any campaigns by the people of any nation to bring BACK their monarchy?

There are still monarchs or would-be monarchs HOPING to make a comeback, and a few who’ve made comebacks.

Spain’s Juan Carlos re-assumed the throne after General Franco’s death.

Sihanouk, the former monarch of Cambodia, returned to Cambodia after the fall of the Khmer Rouge, and is sort of a figurehead there (though not a real king any more).

From time to time, you hear that the Shah’s son wants to return to Iran, or that one of the Romanovs would like to return to Russia as a constitutional monarch. You’’ even hear occasional calls among ethnic Polynesians for a return to the Hawaiian monarchy.

But I don’t see any monarchist movements that deserve to be taken too seriously.

sure, King George the appointed here in the US.

The King of Bulgaria made a comeback within the past 10 years after a 50 year Soviet inspired exit and served as a Prime Minister before stepping down. The National Church has vague ideas about bringing him back as a constitutional monarch.

I see, you want us back now do you.

We’ll think about it

I thought Sihanouk abdicated and one of his sons was appointed king?

Cambodia is a kingdom and its current king is Norodom Sihamoni, who was selected by the throne council after Sihanouk abdicated.. Sihanouk and his wife are referred to as the King-Father and the Queen-Mother.

Given the number of deposed monarchs about, there will always be some possible long shots waiting in the wings. Those families tend to have long memories and keep track of heirs for generations, so there is a recognized claimant after the original monarch who was deposed is long dead.

Add to the list that we have Prince Ra’ad of Iraq (whose father was the cousin to the last ruling king of Iraq, and became the heir in exile after the immediate royal family was killed following a military coup). When Saddam was taken down, there was some discussion of bringing Ra’ad back and establishing a constitutional monarchy. Supposedly, Richard Perle liked the idea.

The Hapsburgs have a shot at Hungary. Or Austria. The Savoys could do it in Italy. Zod, think, of Afghanistan has a shot. None of these countries have a strong anti-monarchial sentiment. Of course we are talking about some serious Tom Clancy alignment of the stars, but it could happen.

There are smallish monarchist movements in France; some support the Bonaparte family (Napoleon III’s descendants, to give you an idea), and some others support this or that branch of the Bourbons, the royal family that reigned at various intervals before France became a republic.

There also are quite a few (but not many) monarchists in Italy. Many of those support the Savoys, and those tend to have political views to the far right, including Fascist nostalgics.

Others support regional independence and the return of the previous ruling dynasties, such as the Bourbons in Naples (a junior branch of the Spanish family, if I remember correctly) and the Lorraine-Habsburgs in Tuscany.

The what to the who now?

You’re not thinking of Zog I of Albania, are you? The current pretender to Afghani throne is Ahmed Shah Khan; he is the eldest living son of Mohammed Zahir Shah, the last shah of Afghanistan, who was deposed in 1973 and died earlier this year.

Sure he is. That’s why you have been summoned to be beheaded because of your post. Do you lefties really think that we are now living under tyranny because of G.W. Bush or do you just dislike him and are unable to articulate your arguments without resorting to personal attacks against him?

I must qualify that I am no fan of the current president. But the fact that I just said that and am not in jail, or on my way there is great evidence that he is not “king” or a “dictator”.

These leftist arguments are really wearing very thin in the face of evidence…

I seem to recall reading several years ago, that there is a group of Cossacks in Russia that regularly toast the Czar, and fervently hope for the return of the Royal Family.

The problem with a return of the czar is that there is no clear heir, one of the dudes with the best claim was mayor of Palm Beach Florida and had no intentions of bringing back the “family business”. wiki "After the Soviet Union broke apart in the early 1990s, Leningrad reverted to its original name of St. Petersburg, and a private delegation visited Ilyinsky while he served on Palm Beach City Council to ask him to return to Russia to claim the throne as tsar. Ilyinsky said, “Gentlemen, I could not be more pleased and flattered at your invitation, but I must tell you that I am entirely satisfied with my present occupation.”

Let’s keep this factual and avoid the temptation to politicize the thread. Thanks.

It’s all purely academic, but Grand Duchess Maria of Russia has one of the strongest claims of anyone. The problem with Russian pretenders is that in order to keep one’s claim to the throne one must marry in accordance with several old imperial decrees. Namely to only marry another member of a (formerly) sovereign family.

To Gfactor, jtgain and any other interested parties. it was a glib comment, and upon reflection (initiated by being called on it by both the above mentioned parties) inappropriate to this forum. I apologize to all for not using better judgement. “Shucks Ma! Didn’t mean no harm!”. Have a nice weekend all.

Albania had a referendum on returning the House of Zogu to power in 1997, but it was voted down by a two-thirds margin

 You’re Spanish or French?
