My g/f and I went to the park to watch Bringing Up Baby last night. It’s one of her favourite films, but I’ve never seen it.
Still haven’t seen it.
There was a problem with the DVD. Serious glitches. The first was when Cary Grant went to the restaurant. They restarted the film from the beginning of the scene, but the subtitles were now on. A little distracting. Then there was a more serious glitch after Cary Grant meets Baby. He’s walking on the sidewalk while Katherine Hepburn follows in a car. After a minute or two of extreme choppiness they tried to fix it again.
But shortly before the problem developed a couple in their early-20s sat right in front of us. G/F was on her small beach chair. I was on my Therma-Lounger, which means that I was on the ground. The girl asked the people directly behind her if she was in the way. As she was on the ground, she didn’t obstruct my view. But her b/f set up his chair directly in my line of sight and never bothered to see if he was in anyone’s way.
With the technical problems and the rude guy who plopped his chair in front of people, g/f suggested we just watch the film on DVD at a later date. As we left (while the people showing the film were trying to fix the problem) we passed some people behind us. The guy said, ‘We got here late, and we sat down in back!’ referring to the guy who obstructed the view. Apparently Tuque Boy was in his way as well.
Bringing Up Baby was the last of four films shown in a local park. The others were The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre (g/f didn’t care for it), From Here To Eternity (she liked that one; it’s not one of my favourites), and Forbidden Planet. She really liked the last, and it was the first time she’d seen it. I’d told her it was ‘a classic’, but she was dubious because she’s not really into the genre. I’m glad she liked it.
It seems we were destined not to see Bringing Up Baby. It was to be the first film shown this year, only the screen blew down at the original venue before they started the film. Then there were the technical difficulties last night. I guess we’ll just have to watch it at her place.
