Brit Dopers - thoughts on Lembit Öpik?

So for some reason, this article from the UK popped up on my feed:

“Lembit Öpik just got dumped on Twitter - and it was pretty brutal.”

So, intrigued by the name, and the idea of some one named Öpik being a former MP from Wales, I googled around a big.

He seems just a tad … goofy? Rejected by the Lib Dems? Is he “someone to watch” or just “someone for the media to point at, laughing”?

The latter. He’s known mainly for going out with one of The Cheeky Girls, of Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum) fame.

And you didn’t provide a link?

Think: Boris Johnson’s less gifted cousin.

Not that I am suggesting that Boris Johnson is particularly gifted. If you see what I mean.

For what it’s worth, back when he was an MP (I was working at the time) I found myself in a central London pub with a group of Texan clients. LO was a couple of tables away. Very difficult to explain who and what he was. A soon to be failed minor league celebrity politician. Or something like that.

Reading his wiki bio, I get the impression of someone who thinks more highly of himself than did the average voter.

The apparent oddity of his name comes from his Estonian heritage, and led to his being known, in the heyday of the Liberal Democrats, as “the human anagram”.

But it’s all too easy for people who’ve had their 15 minutes as a “colourful” MP to fall into the celebrity trap and try to become famous for being famous, and end up being tedious and pointless (across all parties - I’m looking at you, George Galloway and Anne Widdecombe - and heaven knows they’ve been through enough political parties).
