I haven’t been seeing too much teevee for quite a while but I have been watching a little more over the past couple of weeks. There seem to be a few things that look quite interesting:
**‘Teachers’ **– ‘egg’ from ‘This Life’ as (maybe) some kind of male equivalent of Bridget Jones in a sec-mod school. Appeared to suggest male characterisation need not be entirely of the tiresome ‘when-will-he-grow-up’ genre by radically having a man actually engaging his brain occasionally. Okay, so he thinks about sex a lot…but I liked it on first viewing ?
**‘Happiness’ **– the Paul Whitehouse vehicle that, I think, he also (at least) produces. Looks good – wonder if this might mature into something quite fresh. Last night suggested a normal love interest would be introduced but, hopefully, Whitehouse has a twist or two in store. Liked the Rod Stewart discussion he had with I-don’t-know-who. Seems promising to me but that might be an age thing ?
’Trigger Happy’ – Who is this guy ?. The format might get tired quite quickly but at the moment it’s hysterical. For those of you who haven’t met Coldfire, I have to say the Dutchman who learnt English via a medical dictionary (and stops people in the street for a chat) is the spitting image of our illustrious Dutch Mod. I was rolling around on the floor after seeing that!!!
Any views on those and anything else I should be looking out for ?
I really like Trigger Happy TV, and Spaced (which sadly finishes this week) is a scarily accurate (and very, very funny) comedy about pretentious north London types.
I second Trigger Happy TV and Spaced. Every time I hear that certain ring tone on a mobile I half expect to see a guy with a huge mobile phone yelling “HELLO, NO ITS CRAP.”
(And the final season of DS9 on beeb2 }} Klingon smilie anyone!)
I don’t watch much TV myself but Trigger Happy’s good innit? And i agree- you really, really should watch Spaced (Friday, C4, 9.30pm)- comedy genius. It’s the one programme i never miss an episode of.
Father Ted’s being repeated at the moment too. And i do like Room 101.
I haven’t really gotten into any of these shows except for Spaced, which unfortunately I picked up late in the season. Oh well.
I spent an hour last night flipping between Bad Girls and the show about women in the Victorian era, both of which were quite watchable. I also try to catch Bremner, Bird and Fortune and So Graham Norton whenever possible (Did anyone else see the cake contest, where the audience submitted various sorts of rude pastries? I howled at the winner’s remarks that “I couldn’t do sponge cake – so I iced a chicken.”).
Now if we could only get Channel 4 to stop moving West Wing later and later…
Okay, in that outfit he doesn’t look exactly like you but you should see him dressed as a Dutchman, doing a Dutch accent and only having his medical book English to converse with. I swear, it’s the funniest thing - get the girlie to tape it for you
Oooohh – thanks to jr8 for reminding me of Bremner, Bird and Fortune !!
Refering back to OP, i forgot to mention The Armstrong and Miller Show. It’s not on at the moment but look out for it when it does come on - a sketch show at its best.
All this light entertainment has almost made me forget **The Cops[b/] ,its as close as a Brit cop drama will get to something like NYPD, in fact its sort of like NYPD from the point of view of the bobbies on the beat. Its a hundred times grittier than crap like **The Bill[b/] and a much better produced programme. It might be a bit late in the series to get into it but the characters are good and it deals with more realistic issues, especially when it comes to community policing.
