broken teeth

In my life I have been privy to two broken teeth. When the first one happened it was plainly obvious but the pain soon subsided and I was able to function for about a month until the pain was dreadful enough to go to the dentist (i didn’t have insurance at the time).
The second time just seemed to happen, one day I was running my tongue around my mouth and hey there’s something spikey and hollow. I keep myself in good shape and maintain good hygiene but I honestly don’t know how the hell this tooth could’ve broke without me knowing of the splendid event. Where would the other part of my tooth go? Swallowed? Spit it out? Ground to tiny bits?
Any dentists have ideas on what might’ve happened?

It’s possible you have a second or third tooth underneath the broken tooth beginning to grow in. This actually happened to me once - the tooth on top failed to fall out “naturally,” and so the one underneath simply grew right up through the middle of it. Needless to say, it wasn’t pleasant, and scared the crap out of me until I discovered what was actually going on.

Anyway, the best idea would definitely be to see a dentist about it, regardless.
