That was one of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn. Delicious surf and/or turf with some Asian influences, nothing traditional, everything interesting. Add to that loud Grateful Dead music and a thurst-quenching original drink menu. Oh and the desserts! Shit, and I never got around to trying the chocolate sushi. Damn! It was always “eh, next time” (it was $14 afterall. That kind of money for dessert gets reserved for only the most special of occassions).
But it looks like there will be no next time. I went by there last week and much to my shock and dissappointment, the place has been cleared out and is now named “South” (IIRC). On some quick research I see that the chef and owner, Marc Elliot, also operates the Jewish deli Nosh on Atlantic, though I’ve never been there.
So does anyone know the scoop? The place got great reviews in general and was always packed. Did it move? There was no forwarding address posted. Is Nosh still open?
Dang, this is the second time in 2 days I hit “Submit” instead of “Preview.”
I dialed the number on **Moe’s **link, and got a recording that said the number has been “temporarily disconnected.” I thought maybe they’d have a new number I could post, but no suck luck.
I mapquested it, and it appears to have been on the very TIP of Red Hook (H.P. Lovecraft fans, take notice), about four blocks from where I buy my propane and smoked fish from sweet old Russian guys.
Moe, sounds like your OP has been partially answered, please excuse a slight hijack:
Other than Blue Star, what else do you like around downtown?
We take a regular pilgrimage to Brooklyn, usually taking the train over to Borough Hall or Clark Street, and then walk back via the Promenade and the Brooklyn Bridge.
There’s a whole shitload of new restaurants along Atlantic Avenue. Try some of them and get back to us.
If you venture further into darkest Brooklyn, the places along Smith Street and Fifth Avenue are now competing with some of the top places in Manhattan.
Yep, Smith St. is a good place to start. Start at Atlantic and just walk south. Check out the menus in the windows as you go and see what you’re in the mood for that day. They’re all as good as you’ll find in Manhattan only cheaper and there’s a wide range of cuisines represented (Japanese, French, Thai(check out Joya), Carribean, health-conscious, etc.). Then go one block over to Court. Rinse and repeat.
If you want pretty good Mexican food with an incredible view, go about 6 blocks west to Columbia and check out Alma. Make sure you sit on the roof deck. They make an excellent raspberry margharita(sp?).
