Hank and Tommy Aaron have the total combined home run record for 2 brothers. What 2 brothers are in second place?
I don’t know about TWO brothers, but as far as brothers in general, I beleive the DiMaggio’s are in second. If I had to guess some more, and these are true WAGs, I’d look at some combination of the Alous, the Alomars, the Cansecos, and maybe the McGwires. Mark did have a brother, right? Or am I still thinking of Jose and Ozzie Canseco?
Clete & Ken Boyer, maybe?
George Brett’s brother Ken was a pitcher, so it ain’t them.
Well, there may be other brother pairings I haven’t thought of, but of the likely suspects, here’s how it breaks down:
Joe & Vince Dimaggio combined for 488 (361 for Joe, 125 for Vince)
Ken & Clete Boyer combined for 444 (282 for Ken, 162 for Clete)
Cal & Billy Ripken hit 444 (402 + counting for Cal, 20 for Billy)
MAYBE I’m missing somebody obvious… or maybe one of the other guys with 500+ homers had a little-known brother who hit a couple. But it looks like Joe & Vince are second on the brother list.
BTW< Mark McGwire DID have a brother who was a great athlete… but in football! Dan McGwire was the Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback for a while. Great arm and good size (much bigger than Mark- about 6 foot 8 or so!), but not much mobility, and got murdered by the pass rush.
Problem is, you’ve forgotten about Dom, who hit 87 homers. So the combined DiMaggio family total is 575.
Oops, sorry, I just realized the OP said “two brothers” --though that seems kind of arbitrary. The trivia question is usually posed as “What brothers hit the most home runs” precisely so folks with think of the three DiMaggios and not consider Hank and Tommie Aaron.
Either way, the Aaron’s hit more than the Dimaggios.
Hank alone, with 755, hit more than the 3D’s.
Oooh…another that I forgot, that would be near the top of the list if there were any justice in the world.
Tony and Billy Conigliaro would most certainly be in the top 3 if it had not been for one (misplaced?) pitch in 1967.
Sorry to nitpick but 402 + 20 is only 442.
Please forgive my ignorance in the above post. Contrary to what some may think I do know how to add, so 402 + 20 = 422.
Sound of beating head against wall
Ken Brett was a good hitter for a pitcher. There were times he actually pinch hit for the Pirates and Phillies from what I remember. One year he hit 4 homers, he did have 10 career home runs and a batting ave of .262. No records of course, but he wasn’t bad.
Right, I know, that’s my point…that the question is normally phrased “What brother combination…” rather than “What two brothers…” Doing it this way makes people think of the DiMaggios (three brothers) first, and ignore the less obvious but correct answer, Hank and Tommie Aaron.
