SA intimidation contributed to the rise of the Nazis, breaking down the electoral activity of the left-wing parties. But the SA’s reputation for street violence, heavy drinking, and quasi-socialist radicalism was a hindrance.

Another hindrance was the more or less open homosexuality of Röhm and other SA leaders such as his deputy Edmund Heines. [1]

In 1931, the Munich Post, a Socialist newspaper, obtained and published Röhm’s letters to a friend in which Röhm discussed his sexual affairs with men. This resulted in a national scandal. The Nazis claimed that the letters were forged.[citation needed] Many writers have suggested Röhm and Heines allowed or encouraged SA promotions on the basis of sexual liaisons with themselves and other SA leaders. This was in spite of the official Nazi policy which condemned homosexuality. For example, SA Gruppenführer Karl Ernst had been a bouncer at a homosexual nightclub.

Except that Bush joked about how he’d like to be a dictator. And said “there ought to be limits to freedom.” And locked people up for years without charges or access to representation, and claimed the authority to do the same to anybody he wanted to, including you. Little things like that. Otherwise, you’re right; it’s just like that.

Right. I wonder if this idiot in Georgia ever voiced those concerns about how Bush and cronies were operating. A slow and steady tearing down of our constitutional freedoms is something to be concerned about.

Simply having the largest party in the Reichstag wasn’t the goal point for being chancellor. At the time Hitler was appointed chancellor in 1933, no party had a majority. Hitler lost the presidential election to Hindenburg the year before and it was only when several other parliamentary coalitions failed that Hindenburg reluctantly agreed to form one with the Nazis along with Hitler’s demands to be made chancellor.

Anyway, the point is that Broun was dead-wrong when he said Hitler was elected, in any way, shape, or form.

That just means he was as elected as anyone ever gets in a parliamentary democracy. You create the executive that can hold the confidence of the house, and in a fragmented, multiparty situation, that may involve a concession such as appointing a coalition party’s leader prime minister (or chancellor, in this case). It happens from time to time in most parliamentary democracies. Technically he wasn’t elected – no head of government in a parliamentary democracy is – but the house that allowed him to command its confidence was elected.
