Brower Change Detected pop up

Yow! A pop up opens – even when I’m not using a browser! – with a picture of a padlock and the message “Your browser settings have changed.”

I click to close it. It closes…and then pops right up again! It won’t go away! I’ve rebooted! It won’t fucking go away!

Who are these assholes, and how do I make them go to hell away?

Meanwhile, the goddamn pop up is open, and all I can do is move it over to one side of my screen! I haven’t been this angry in a long time!

Help?

What browser do you use? I once had that issue with firefox but a reset fixed it

If you are using firefox just type about:support in the address bar and it will give you the reset button and an explanation of what it does.

Nope. Not only a Firefox reset didn’t cure it, a full Firefox uninstall and re-install didn’t cure it.

What IS this damn thing, and how do I make it go away?

I can open about:support, as you recommend, but I don’t know what to look for.

Helpity?

Also: the appearance of my Firefox screen has changed. I can’t see the “tools” option any more!

Virus/Trojan/Malware, I would bet. Run your antivirus, and good luck.

Perhaps I spoke too soon: this page describes an identical sounding problem, and apparently resetting FireFox fixed it.

Nope; resetting Firefox doesn’t make it go away. I’m running my antivirus now, full scan.

Irritating!

about:support just takes you to the troubleshooting page you get via the help menu in fewer clicks. If you have tried a reset then I’d be running to malwarebytes.org as a next step

Bummer. AVG scan, and Malware Bytes scan don’t get rid of it. Resetting Firefox settings doesn’t get rid of it.

I’m taking 'er in to a shop tomorrow. I’ll happily pay decent money to be free of this “Old Man of the Sea.”

(I can’t close it, but can only move it away to one corner of my screen, from which it peeks out at me maliciously. God help the son of a bitch who programmed this thing, if I ever get two hands on him…)

Advice, please: is AVG a decent antivirus and anti-malware thing? Should I pay the money to buy the registered version of Malware Bytes? Does it make sense to keep both?

I have almost no experience with AVG. The advantage to paying for Malwarebytes is that you get the real-time protection, but that probably wouldn’t have helped you in this case if MB couldn’t deal with the problem after infection.

Just an FYI, I’ve used an antimalware program called Hitman Pro that has consistently succeeded for me where every other program has failed. It would be worth trying if you haven’t already taken your computer to the shop.

I had the same problems but following, to the letter, this thread, fixed 'em.
