Browser wars: What browser do you use?

Netscape at home and in the school.

I have to use IE at work. I’ve tried like hell to make them get rid of it but they won’t. And they wonder why bad thinks happen to the computers.

If you’re on broadband, download the extension Tweak Network, set it to Power and fasten your seatbelt.

I used to use Firefox, but I went back to IE because Firefox started getting too many popups. I had the popup blocker extention installed, but seems that eventually it became ineffective. (Neither Webroot SpySweeper nor Microsoft’s Anti-Spyware program found any malware on my computer, BTW.) In any event, IE now has a built-in popup blocker that seems to be more effective than Firefox’s blocker was. The only thing I really missed from Firefox was the extention that looked up words at Dictionary.com. I used that to check my spelling when I was composing a post. However, I’ve since installed the Google toolbar on IE, which has a spell-checking function, so it’s all good now.

Supposedly, version 7 of IE is going to feature tabbed windows. It’s obviously ripped off from Firefox,

Any application can make sure some dlls are preloaded though in Windows. Net result stays the same though. Firefox just doesn’t draw as well as IE. What bothered me most about Firefox in the end was how the pages scroll when I drag the toolbar for instance. It’s a lot faster and smoother in IE.

I think Firefox “ripped off” Opera for the tabs, so fair’s fair.

I started using Opera about a year ago, and I love it.

Well, I’ve been testing Opera and I like it a lot. Only it doesn’t support Windows NT security, so I can’t use it for stuff like our company Intranet, or Outlook Web Access.

Other than that though, it’s very nice.

Reporting back: Opera is awesome! I have to use IE or Firefox at work and it sucks.

I use IE6 and home and work. Don’t have problems with it so i never bothered to changed. I have checked out Firefox before, it was neat and all, but i’m just too used to IE to bother switching. I don’t dryhump the internet every day and when i do it’s just for a litle while so fancy pants browsers don’t really rate that high on my must-have list.

Opera at home and work, for the past two years. Until Opera 8, I had to use IE for a few websites, like gmail, banks, etc. Opera 8 rocks!

I use Firefox in Linux and waffle between Firefox and Safari in Mac OS X.

I tend to stay away from Windows and IE unless I need to test something.

one thing I wonder about … in a topic overview on Straightdope, if I hover over a topic in IE the tooltiptext shows the first paragraph of the actual topic, which sometimes saves me from having to actually browse to the topic, which is great. In Opera, the tooltiptext just shows the link to the topic, which is pointless. Is this configurable?

If you hover just above the link, it will show the tooltiptext.

I know that. But if you do that in IE, it shows you the first paragraph of the Topic behind the link. In Opera, it just shows the web address of the topic, which especially on this board, is totally useless.

What I mean is, if you hover just slightly above the link (not on the link itself) it will show you the first few lines of text, just as in IE.

A-ha! There you go … thanks!

It still looks a lot better in IE (properly formatted and all), but at least its there.

Firefox here, mainly because of all the tweaking and extensions.

Do a search for mozilla pipelining and give it a try.

I also recommend
Adblock: blocks all ads (look for the filterset.g filter online)
Greasemonkey: manipulates how you look at webpages (I found a script where I can download embedded movie trailers)
Customize Google: does all sorts of neat things with Google
