Bruises

Why have I never bruised? It seems like a stupid question to those who do bruise but I’ve found others who do not and all have the same question, maybe because it is not an illness & no one thinks it is important enough to answer. I actually did not even notice until my teens that with all my injuries from head to toe as I was fairly rough doing most anything to challenge my self & pain threshold & ability to heal. I have fallen out of countless trees, off roofs, been hit & hit numerous cars on bicycle, smacked my head & been smacked by almost every object, tree, walls, been kicked in the face as a goal y in soccer, countless times. Have had many opportunities but have only broken my nose, thumb & ankle, have had surgery for a deviated septum, back surgery twice, total hip replacement, been attacked & beaten by several individuals so that my face swelled up like the elephant man but by the time the cops got there all the swelling had gone down, there was not one bruise, maybe a few small scrapes, I had witnesses but even with that the cops looked at me like I was lying because of my appearance. When people describe me one of the first things of notice is my facial scars, I have had more stitches or staples than I can remember, my shins unlike most who’s are smooth, look like a freshly tilled field with all the bumps, dips & scars. With all of this, I have never bruised even slightly, yet my siblings bruise if the wind blows too hard. WHY???

No way to guess. The most skeptical answer is that you probably have bruised, but have never noticed it. Perhaps your complexion helps hide it.

Or…you may have just been lucky. Life is weird, and you never know.

It seems extremely unlikely that you have a significant physical mutation that prevents bruises from developing. That would imply a lot of very big alterations in your blood-clotting mechanism, your capillary system, and so on.

Now, I’m not exactly gonna suggest you perform controlled experiments…

You may want to get in touch with Dr. Xavier. He has a special school for people like you.

I wonder about this, too - I feel a lump or just pain under the skin when I bump myself, but I don’t tend to bruise, either. I did an informal clotting time test on myself years ago, and I seem to clot very quickly - I figure that might be the explanation.

Me either. Sometimes people who bruise easily are anemic. The only time I had anything resembling a bruise was when I fell and cracked a rib.

Is it possible that your blood is thicker than usual (which is NOT a good thing)? I know that when people are on a blood thinner, they tend to bruise just about by breathing too hard. It seems that inability to bruise would have the opposite effect. Have any of you mentioned this to a doctor?

I am somewhat similar. It is very difficult for me to bruise. Actually, the last bruise I remember was several years ago when I was leaning hard against a piece of metal for a long period of time. Not a strike.

Some older women I know seem to have several bruises and don’t even know where they get most of them.

I don’t bruise at all either. Now, I haven’t been through what the OP’s been through, but I’ve hurt myself enough times or been hit by things hard enough that I should have a bruise. I don’t think I’ve had a bruise since grade school. I was actually really surprised when I had a very small bruise from an IV line a few months ago. First black and blue mark I’ve seen on my skin in probably 20 years.

I have to admit, it’s a little annoying when I hurt myself bad enough that I want to scream and end up with a big sore/tender spot for days and don’t get anything to show for it. You know those times when you hit your finger with a hammer or pinch your palm with a pliers or drop a motor on your knee trying to balance it while you pick up the bolt that you left just out of reach…it’d be nice if the next day I could say ‘look how hard that hit me’ Nope, never get to do that.

Joey, that’s what I find, too - you get no sympathy for a big owie if there isn’t any bruise!

panache, I googled Thick Blood, and that is possible - I have an annual physical complete with the standard blood tests and they all come back normal, but they don’t do any coagulation tests - those might be abnormal.

I rarely bruise and I attribute that to mega doses of vitamin C. A lady friend with whom I run bruises easily. I recommended to her to take more C. C helps with the integrity of the cellular wall.
