Brush paint my rusty car?

Hi all…

My 26 year old car is looking pretty ruff.

The top surfaces are all now pretty much pitted surfaces with fine scaley rust and no paint.

The more vertical surfaces are totally oxidized gray paint that you could probably remove with a hard scrubbing.

I’d like to just brush paint it.

Any recommendations for a primer/paint combo?

The paint doesnt need to be particularly cheap.

I am more concerned about how well the paint bonds to the rust/bare metal, stops the rust (or at least doesnt accelerate the process) and generally lasts than I am about how well it looks. It honestly could hardly look any worse and it never looked that good to begin with.

It would be nice if the paint was thick enough that later on when I have the time I could put on another coat by brush and sand it reasonably smooth.

I seem to recall years ago when I contemplated this that someone recommended something called Por 15?

Any good specific sites on the web for this kind of project?

thanks!

I’m not sure if this helps you. Since we didn’t have access to paint sprayers in Cuba cars are painted by hand using metallic paint. We used sponges instead of brushes, and sanded with very ligh sandpaper between coats. In the end the cars, motorcyle in my case, had a semi-glossy finish, but it was better than bare metal. This was a laborious process that took many days to allow for proper drying, so like I said this might not help you.

I used a spray-on rust stabilizer product on an old POS car I used to own. It worked well. Not sure of the brand, but it was similar to this:

They also have a brush-on rust stabilizer.

That’s what I used too, and then followed up with colored auto spray paint.
