Note: being in the U.K. I haven’t seen Series 2 yet, so please don’t spoil it for me!
In BSG Series 1, we see both male and female cylons (Boomer, No 6, press guy, guy at armoury), but the two major cylon characters, Number 6 and Boomer, are both female. The male cylons have bit-parts. Is there any deeper meaning to this?
Maybe the Cylons know human men are very suceptable to the advances of hot women. Makes their brains turn off and Balthar gives Six the codes. Or they look less intimidating and therefore appear to be less of a threat and Boomer gets away with a bunch of crap and still gets close enough to Adama to shoot him.
Apart from the hot chixxx/fanboys/ratings angle, there’s perhaps some affirmative action going on - the show has a predominance of women in positions of power, unlike most other shows or movies or even SF. The presidency and high military command aren’t effectively reserved for men. Even the hottest, most self-assured pilot is a woman. Having the villains (and it’s getting harder to see the difference with every show, isn’t it?) be women as well, fairly easily manipulating the men, with full confidence in their own abilities and accomplishments, is different enough from convention to be interesting.
