I will follow the trend with threads and leave the first post spoiler free since we wouldnt want anyone who hasnt seen the show to discover that Adama is really the father of Starbucks baby and they are planning on running away to the Cylon home world to live in toaster heaven…
ok I just want to find out what we know vrs what we think we know, for instance
I just watched all 4 hours of the pilot and learned (relearned?) that when a meat toaster dies its conciousness is transfered to another body, presumably one thats just waiting for the event to get up and start walking around. I was kind of under the impression that all of that model would recieve an update when one died.
which leads to the question how many copies do they have sitting around with no memories? cause when Boomer nuked that Cylon ship there were one hell of a lot of dead boomers memories floating around all of a sudden.
in the pilot it was lt. Guide ah (one word) now its Gate ah wtf?
post something you know or think you know or dont know and want to know or want to know but think you know bot arent sure you know and we will see if we know.
It’s Gaeta. Hence the dual, messy pronunciations. Soe people go one way with it, some go another.
It’s still unknown exactly how memories are shared between Cylons. The current MommyBoomer has most of Sharon’s memories but didn’t know that Sharon had died. She denied to Roslyn that her knowledge and memories were continually transmitted in real time. Likewise the CylonBoomer we saw in the cinema was surprised to know that MommyBoomer was still alive. Given that “We’re all Sharon”, it’s hard to say if any one Cylon is ever “resurrected” or if their memories just go into a common pool.
A big problem is that even if you presume that the Cylons aren’t deliberately lying to the humans, there’s always the possibility that they sincerely believe what they’re saying, but only because they’re programmed to. Cylons may not be robotically hardwired but they are artificial, and so far the series has kept the Cylon’s motives and goals very mysterious.
It seems a safe bet that (1). Centurions will always attack and kill humans on sight. (2). Cylon raiders and Base Stars will attack the fleet on sight. (3). The biological Cylons are interested in keeping at least some humans temporarily alive, for some broader goal. Resolving all this will provide a lot of plot development.
The behaviour of the cylons doesn’t make a bit of sense and I don’t think it ever will. The needs of the short term plot reign supreme. One episode the cylons can be omniscient god like beings who never make mistakes. The next episode they are more dumb than a sack of axehandles.
The sooner you accept this, the sooner you can just get back to enjoying the show for what it is.
uh I never stopped enjoying the show for what it is, believe it or not some people enjoy trying to figure stuff out.
yeah I was just talking about what was said in the pilot episodes.
I can kind of understand the various Boomers all having a core set of memories that are identical it would make sense to start with something and then each one goes out and developes their own experiences.
Boomer-mama is lying through her teeth. When the party of folks was on Kobol looking for the temple of Athena and Adama tried to strange her? She says right afterwards “And you ask why?”, which was, of course, the question he asked of her corpse back on the Galactica. This strongly suggests that even the corpses of meat-toasters can transmit data to the others. I don’t think it’s beyond Boomer to act surprised when she’s really not… but maybe there are simply plot holes too.
That’s just it. There’s nothing to figure out. The show isn’t :
“doesn’t make sense because we don’t have all the pieces to this complicated puzzle and eventually it will start being explained.”
It’s just :
“doesn’t make sense.”
I was just like you during the first half of season one. When Boomer and Helo successfully evoided the army of determined Cylons simply by running down a huge drainpipe, I actually laughed out loud. I knew, from that moment on, that the writers of the show aren’t going to tie the loose ends together. The show just doesn’t make sense. It never will. It’s not Babylon 5, it’s BSG. It’s got guns, pretty people without much clothes, spaceships and explosions. Enjoy it for what it is. But, if you expect the plot to start filling in the massive holes instead of simply creating more of them then you are in for disappointment.
And so, a thread which was opened to talk about one thing is sitting here for you to take a shit in.
If you’d open a “Galactica suxxors” thread, I’m sure you’ll get lots of reponses.
Otherwise, in a thread that was meant for people to collate and speculate you could, you know, not try to do the opposite.

Besides, it makes perfect sense. We just haven’t figured it out yet.
Take it easy on Debaser. I happen to share his view. I think that the writers are, for the most part, now just throwing cool things at the wall to see what sticks, without really knowing how (or whether) they will tie it together for continuity or overall scheme.
That doesn’t mean anyone is taking a dump on the show, or that they do not like it. I still watch the thing, it is entertaining, I just have a different opinion on where things are going and how it is put together. You could say the same thing about soap operas. Plenty of people watch them, but not everyone needs to be marched lock-step into believing that there is an overarching plan (even though I realize they “have a plan”) beyond turning out interesting episodes every week.
Debaser 's problem seems to be reading comprehension, his posts are kinda like going into a thread where the op is asking how to bake bread and having someone post that you shouldnt even be talking about baking bread because it will only lead to disapointment. your opinion is fine but why post it here where the whole point is to discuss the show and to try and figure things out?
that said, I responded to
with the thought that you dont have to hear the question to know its there, Mama Boomer has most of GBoomers memories, she knows how Adama feels about the crew, its not that much of a leap to just assume Mama Boomer was making a guess. (yeah I know it was bizarre but still a pretty easy guess)
I think the exact phrasing was “you wanted to know why?”
Fair enough. I still think it’s perfectly reasonable to post that you do not think there really is much going on to decipher (so long as you do not stop in simply to bash the show badly). But what you said above at least explains your view without attacking the guy in the same way I thought some of the other posts did.
So, in the spirit of friendship, I will throw this out as a possible “reason” for the plot devices so far.
We know that there are only, what, 12 models of Cylon? Perhaps the reason they are so desparate for a human baby is that they realize their imperfection (because they are limited in diversity and model), and believe that by cross-breeding with humans, they will be able to increase the number of models (or obtain the human uniqueness and diversity that is characteristic of human breeding results, but not Cylon). Perhaps they believe that the human child will be “new,” and will itself be able to create truly unique life.
I’d go with that. Even though human life is flawed and should be eradicated, human life created by Clyons would be perfect.
I really, really hope the plot doesn’t degenerate into some religious, mystical storyline.
It’s bad enough to realize that humans are basically screwed. If they find Earth, the Cylons will find it and kill more humans. If the fleet finds any place to live, the Cylons will find them and destroy them. There really isn’t much to do except flee.
that is very interesting, I like that line of thought.
I’m not just shitting on the show. I’ll admit my comments above aren’t exacltly raving reviews, but the OP didn’t specify that posters contributing to the thread aren’t allowed to be critical of the show at all.
I like the show. I’ve watched every episode of it. I continue to enjoy watching it even more now that I don’t expect it to make sense.
In fact, I’ll go further: At this point, I don’t think it’s even possible to tie all the existing lose ends. The behavior and abilities of the cylons has been so erradic and wildly unpredictable that I can’t even imagine an explanation for it all.
Some of the fan threads for BSG where fans try and find meaning in every detail of the show is silly. It reminds me of the classic Monty Python movie: “Life of Brian”. The mob follows around the “Messiah” character and reads way too much into his every statement and action as if it had meaning when in fact it doesn’t, he’s just bumbling along like everyone else.
Not necessarily.
If you think about it, the Colonials seem to have stagnated, technologically, pretty badly. Two thousand years after arriving at the colonies and, well, it seems like they’ve not managed much.
Who’s to say that when they arrive at Earth they won’t find a society that’s numerous, more technolically advanced and, since it’s our species’ favorite hobby, armed to the teeth?
Just throwing out a possiblity, of course, which is the point of the thread, after all. I kind of subscribe to the theory that Earth is a scorched ball of rock when they get there.
And Debaser, if you don’t think there’s any sort of meaning or intention behind the plot that’s your business. How about you not come into a thread that’s meant to discuss such things simply to point out how don’t think there’s a point? Not only do you not think there’s a point, apparently, but you feel the need to continue posting to the thread?
Unless, of course, you just like being the lekatt in an evolution thread.

Because in the, er, original series Earth was us in the 20th century with blow-dry hair, and Our Heroes had these really stupid flying motorcycles…but Ron Moore wouldn’t do that to us.
Seriuosly, so far they’ve obeyed the original series aside from Gender and miscellaneous ancient religious references, but I digress, so I’m expecting Earth to be in the 21st century.
I don’t know about that one…
I’ve blocked most of it out (I’m one of those who, when they heard about the ‘new series’ thought, “Why the fuck are they bothering? The old one was unmitigated crap!”), but did they ever get to Earth in the original series?
By “original series” here, I’m talking Battlestar Galactica, NOT (NOT NOT NOT NOT!) Galactica 1980.
-Joe
Then I may be in error. You see, I never watched the damn things. I would be channel surfing and…"(click)WTF? Flying motorcycles? Oh, it’s that Starbuck thing…(Click)"
