Buah and the Pope
Maybe he knows the protocol and chose to address the Pope in the ‘wrong’ way. Personally, I would not be able to call the Pope “His Holiness,” any more than I would call the Queen of Denmark “Your Majesty.” It doesn’t strike me as a very good protocol, and perhaps it should be changed for us non-Catholics. I have nothing against the Pope, but he’s not my religious leader.
Yeah, the Catholics have always been kinda grabby with the titles. Even worse than “Your Holiness” I think is “Father.” I already have a father. I’m not calling some stranger in a black collar “father.” Seems to me the Catholics have got themselves in trouble using terms like that …

I’m betting, though, that he can spell “Bush”…

God knows, I can’t.

'sup pope!
see? Couldda been worse. For grins I like to hear Buah’s gaffes in the Ross Perot voice. That little dude would have been beaten to death by Blair years ago.
It’s not a matter of good manners. It’s a matter of submitting oneself to “traditions” born of centuries of relentless savagery. Monarchy in any form is a disgusting evil which I dearly hope I will live to see ended, and no one should feel obligated to participate in such disgusting ritual no matter how quaint it may be.

Monarchy evil and disgusting?

So who pissed in your cornflakes today…your dudeship

At least the Pope rates a “sir”. The British Prime Minister only deserves a “yo!”

And the German Chancellor just gets a back rub.

But what did the Pope call Bush? Your Decidery?

Maybe this is apropos, but I am just now picturing Bush chastising one of his aides in the manner of Charlie Brown’s teacher.

“Buah buah bubuah buah buaaaah.”
“Yes, Mr. President.”
“Buah bubuah buahah buah?”
“No. Mr. President.”
“Buah buaaaah buahbuah bubuah buah.”
“I apologize, Mr. President. It won’t happen again.”

The correct form of address for the US President when abroad is “Your Excellency”.
So if I decide that the proper address for me is “Your Amazing Magnificence”, you would expect the Pope and the President of the US to address me this way? :dubious:

See, protocol is about tradition. You making up a title for yourself isn’t. There’s this dictionary thing you might wish to consult when dealing with terms that may be unfamiliar to you.

As far as I can tell, she’s not taking anybody else’s title, in which the rules would apply. She’s making up one of her own, which has no previous protocol or tradition attached. If Chimera wanted me to address her as “your Majesty”–seriously, not as a joke–I’d go :dubious: at the very least, but I don’t have the same problem with “your Amazing Magnificence”.

All Traditions start somewhere. All Titles are made up at some point. Neither sprang fully formed at the Big Bang.

There are these things called History and Reality that you might want to consult before getting pissy over things that are unfamiliar to you.

And Kythereia, I’m a guy.

My apologies. I promise to buy you a drink if we ever meet up some time, as penance. kowtows

Right, 'cos everywhere they have elected presidents they live in real democracies with stable economies and superb human rights records. <forum-inappropriate comment skipped>.

“Monarchy is evil” /= “Monarchy is evil and Presidential Democracy is Fantastic!”

You’re rolling your eyes at a comment that hasn’t even been made or even implied. And for that, you get a .

Uh, no it isn’t.

Errr… I don’t think it was particular wrong, guys. You don’t have to append “Your Holiness” to every single sentence you say to the Pope even if you are Catholic.

This is what I was thinking. I believe that the protocol of using the title is usually for introductions…“pleased to meet you, Your Holiness,” for example. After that, you can use a respectful “sir” or “ma’am” when answering questions.

Or if you’re Prince Harry a stiff arm salute
