Buck or Butt Naked?

Which do you say, when you say?

For many years I was pretty sure that “buck” war correct, then started to have doubts. Was I hearing “buck” or “butt”. Now it seems that “butt” is more common, though “buck” is still acceptable.

In my own family, when nakedness needed to be expressed only moreso “stark” was used most often.

Yes. And “as a jaybird” to intensify also works.

Lewis Grizzard had a good distinction between “Nay-ked” and “Nekkid” that I’ll try to find on YouTube. Meanwhile does anybody else remember it?

Buck naked. Butt-ass naked. Both are part of my vocabulary. Butt naked? Not so much.

I am fairly sure it was originally buck but has got corrupted to butt by people who don’t know better.

Butt to mean behind is pretty much a purely American thing anyway, I think. British people say bum. * Buck naked* is probably more widespread (and is making no particular reference to the backside).

Lewis Grizzard Naked/Nekkid

Both. Depending on which ever one falls out of my mouth. I don’t really think about it before I say it.

The only way to travel.

I voted ‘buck’ which has a overwhelming majority here, but Google Fight gives only 66,300 hits for “buck naked” versus 1,110,000 hits for “butt naked.” :dubious:

“Buck” was what I heard as a kid. “Butt” is a more recent coinage.

Buck naked. Butt naked has an entry at the Eggcorn Database; make of that what you will.

“Butt” naked. Because I think it sounds funnier.
.

I know it’s really buck naked, but what does that even mean? Butt naked is funny and it means you’re so naked, we can see your butt.

It varies. Buck naked in general, but if the naked ass is prominent somehow, butt naked it is.

Neither, I’m not sure I’ve ever had the chance to use this expression. If I did it would be buck unless I were making a joke for some reason.

Butt naked would just mean your butt is uncovered.

Another lop-sided poll.

But not all of these would be the phrase meaning the adjective “naked” along with an intensifier. Some of them might be places where the word “butt” just happened to abut (heh) the word “naked”. After all if you’re talking about being naked you might just be talking about butts as well,( whereas to coincidentally be talking about male deer would not be so commonplace, HOPEFULLY.)

ETA: which isn’t to say that butt naked isn’t a more commonplace expression! Just that it is closer to even than a naive googlefight might suggest.

Dang it, I was going to mention eggcorns! However, I’m happy to learn there’s an eggcorn database.

We had a similar poll a few months ago with catercorner, which I believe was soundly beaten by both of its eggcorns: cattycorner and kittycorner. It’s nice to see that buck is holding its own!

Buck naked, because it’s a great porn name.

Zeldar, I quoted the Grizzard definition to my wife before I even bothered to click the link. He nails it.

Lewis was the main dude!
