Tonight while Bud Selig was presenting the Arizona Diamond Backs with the World Series trophy, he said they were the first expansion team to win the trophy (or maybe he said they were the fastest), but didn’t the Florida Marlins do it a few years ago?
I thought he congratulated the DB’s for being the 1st team to bring a championship of any sport to the state.
The Marlins were created in '93( with the Rockies?) and the D’backs were created in '98. The Marlins won the WS in '97, the D’backs in '01. So the Marlins won it in their 4th year, while the D’backs won it in their 3rd.
Go M’s
That would mean the Diamondbacks won it in their fourth year (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001) and the Marlins in their fifth.
Only five expansion teams have won the World Series, two of them twice:
New York Mets (1962) - 1969 (8th season) and 1986
Kansas City Royals (1969) - 1985 (17th season)
Toronto Blue Jays (1977) - 1992 (16th season) and 1993
Florida Marlins (1993) - 1997 )5th season)
Diamondbacks (1998) - 2001 (4th season)
In case anyone wondered, the Minnesota Twins (world champs in 1987 and 1991) are not an expansion team, they being the original Senators.
Ah, but the Red Sox (1901) won it in their third season (1903)
1901 was the inception of the American league so they can’t rightly be called an expansion team.
The graphics on last night’s telecast said they were the fastest expansion team to win the WS, doing it in their 4th season.
At least a couple of times someone said it was the first sports championship for the state of Arizona, ignoring the U of A’s basketball and baseball championships, among others. Most of the people got it right in saying it was the first professional sports championship.
… and '03 was the first world series. Which makes next year the 100th world series. Can the 'Backs repeat? Only anothe4r 25 WS wins until they catch up to the Yankees
Not quite. Next year will be the 98th World Series as they did not play one in 1904 or 1994.
Selig said that the Diamondbacks had won the first professional sports championship to Arizona.
Indeed UA and ASU have won numerous NCAA championships in different sports. Both have won in baseball multiple times.
