Buffy 06/05/03 - Touched (spoilers)

I’m gonna do three boxes today. That’s so you, constant spoiler junkie, can pick what to be spoiled about:

Plot:
The episode starts right after Buffy left the house. General confusion and everyone is talking at the same time. Kennedy is being more annoying than ever and even Willow tells her she’s out of line. Faith finally takes controll.

Buffy, meanwhile, is tired of walking the streets and does some breaking and entering to find a place to crash. Andrew and Spike is stuck in that chappel. It’s to late for the drive back and Spike doesn’t want to risk sunlight. Even though I’ve found Andrew amusing at times, he’s plain grating in this scene.

Next day, Faith is more firmly in controll. A plan is made to kidnap a Bringer and try to get some info out of it. Why they think TFE wouldn’t know about this, is beyond me, seeing that all evil is connected.
‘The First as Buffy’ and Caleb are chatting away. They’re disappointed about something but I couldn’t make out what - either my copy sucked, cause it was hard to hear, or it was left unclear for a purpose. Maybe somebody can enlighten me?

Spike returns, is pissed about Buffy being kicked out and storms out to help her. He ends up comforting her.
Giles and the Scoobies get some information from the Bringer and Faith sets out with a search party to find the spot marked X.
Buffy wakes up after being comforted by Spike (not sex), and leaves. He later finds a note, but we. the viewers never find out what it says. Buffy goes to the vineyard where she confronts Caleb. Surpisingly, she shows some new moves, which I’ve never seen before. This is Matrix/Honkong type of running on the walls. It’s not clear if this came from resting in the arms of Spike, but I’ve never seen this on Buffy before.

One more thingh. The mayor shows up. Yey! The best villain ever. In any media. It’s of course The First and he visits Faith. We learn something new from this:
The spirit, soul or whatever, of the mayor, is now part of TFE. Presumably, all evil souls are part of It. How Wood’s mother fits into this, I don’t know. The mayor also has something to say to Faith about Buffy. Mainly that Buffy will always see Faith as a killer and given a chance, she’ll finsih the job from way back when.
Later, when Faith talks to Wood, they touch on something we regulars here talked about back when we had a thread on “Conversations with dead people”, namely that TFE was telling the truth. So Faith is left with the impression that what TFE said about Buffy might happen.
Pro:
Good action.
Seeing the mayor again. The screens sparkles around him and Faith.
Getting to know a little bit more about TFE.
Con:
Still a lot of loose ends which no one seems interested in tying up. What bothers me right now:

  • Joyce. Still no explanation
  • The eye/oracle thing
  • How Spike could say “You were right about the vineyard.” How can he know? The first time around, they stumbled onto it (IIRC). When Buffy was adamant about going back, Spike was out of town.
  • Some things about the characters. Actually - a lot of things. See next box.
Character:

So, I’m really, really, really annoyed. What could have been a six or seven for this episode, is dragged down by some events about two thirds through, which makes it a weak 3.

Everyone is having sex. Well almost.

It does nothing, whatsoever, for the plot or the arc. I get a feeling ME just threw it in to show how edgy and hip they are, now that the series is ending. It’s really annoying, and totally embarrasing, since there is no chemestry involved at all. I actually looked away and felt embarrased.

  1. Faith decides she needs to get some. It’s been a while after all, and isn’t principal Wood just handy to have around. Hang on - didn’t he have a crush on Buffy. And wasn’t Faith a bit hot on Spike. Spaith had chemestry. Wood and Faith has none. I get a feeling it was just there to show black guy/white girl getting it on. And that kind of storytelling just rubs me the wrong way. Lousy.

  2. And then Kennedy seduces Willow. So they haven’t done the dirty deed yet. There’s some talk about how Willow is afraid of letting go, that it might open up a door for magic. Kennedy then says that she’s there to take care of her…
So they end up making love and I guess this is the first lesbian lovemaking ever on broadcast televison in the US, huh? But I really didn’t need to see Kennedy lick Willow’s neck with her pierced toungue . Again - it doesn’t belong in the story, it seems to be there just to show how edgy ME and BtVS are. And with Will recently telling Kennedy she was out of line… it just doesn’t work. They never had chemestry and the whole scene is so contrived it’s almost unbelievable.

  3. Of course, when Xander and Anya hear all the humping going on, they can’t constrain themselves, so they have to do it on the kitchen floor. In a house full of SIT’s. Yeah. Sure. Whatever.
The thing that surpised me, with all the boinking, was that Buffy and Spike wasn’t at it. Some kind of irony, I suppose.

And another thing. When done with the Bringer, Giles just slits his throat. Yes, Ripper’s done some bad things, but he did it mid-sentence. And in front of (IIRC) Dawn, Willow and Andrew. I get a feeling it was just there to get in a cheap joke from Andrew afterwards. But it surely didn’t work. The Ripper persona of Giles is never publicly shown.

Gee. I’m writing a lot this week, ain’t I.

Cliffhanger:

Buffy finds what she’s looking for. A wicked ax.
Faith has taken her troop to a trap. Episodes ends with timer on top of dynamite ticking down. Only seven seconds left. We’ve seen it before.

If you’ve read in the boxes, you know I have very mixed feeling about this episode. The things I didn’t like, were so incredibly bad, they drag down the score a lot (YMMV of course).
3/10

I agree whole heartedly, that episode had a whole lot of blech in it.

2/10. incredibly lame.

One more blech here, while not the worst episode ever, it’s very bad. I’ll give it a 3/10.And who here thinks that Caleb wants Buffy to pick up the axe-thingy, because he can then take it from her. (A sword in the stone kind of thing.

Tom P. I’m sure that’s the case.

And next week we’ll find out that this is the reason TFE hasn’t killed Buffy yet. So I guess the story of the season has been to get the slayer alone, without friends and slayerettes, so it will be easy to get the ax from her. Oh well. Not a very edgy or compelling story (as opposed to Angel). I guess that’s why we get lesbian love scenes and why the fairy of misdirection has been working so hard this year.
I like BtVS very much. It’s been one of the best things on tv, ever. Even now, when it’s bad, it’s still better than most of the crap we get. Maybe it has set some new standards for storytelling and how main characters are defined.
So I’ll forgive this. Everything turns stale eventually. But I was sure hoping it would pick up towards the end. Only two more episodes and no sign of that so far. I’ll comfort myself with S.4 on DVD.

A question, here.
How explicit is the coupling?
(I doubt that spoiler box is needed in light of the previews.
Just wondering what is in store as I look forward to enjoying Buffy with our kids. Anything beyond what has been on the show before?

DinsdaleFaith and Wood: Under covers, quite rigourous. We don’t see much of Xander and Anya, Willow and Kennedy are the “worst”, but there’s no nudity, and it’s not worse than what I’ve seen on countless other shows. (Except for the fact that they’re both female, of course)

Thanks.
My oldest is cool with just about anything, but my 2 younger can get uncomfortable if the sex or violence is too explicit. For example, they have all watched several “R” rated flicks, but mom and dad watch them first to make sure they are okay. And they seem to pretty much trust our judgment when we say, “You would be uncomfortable with such and such.”
Tonite, my wife and I will be at the eldest’s band concert, so the 2 youngest will be at home alone. I think we might tape it, just so they won’t be watching it alone.
Thanks again.

Not the best episode ever, but it had a few good points:
*Loved the interaction between Buffy & Spike.

*Also loved to see Spike stand up for Buffy in front of the rest of the gang. He had their motivations nailed!

*The Mayor. He’s always cool.

*It’s always good to see things fall apart after you leave, because it re-affirms how valuable you were. And things did start to get chaotic without Buffy, and it does show Faith that it’s not easy to lead the group.

*In a related vein, it was cool to see Faith shoot Kennedy down.
If-fy about:

The Matrix-y moves Buffy pulled on Caleb. It was either cool or lame. Haven’t figured out which yet.

And the rest of the episode? Aaaah. I thought it was ok, but nothing special. Which you can pretty much expect from me, since I rarely hate anything that happens on Buffy.

Oh God, you have no idea how long I have been waiting for this episode to air, and then the Wildfeed was delayed! AGH!!! And so I haven’t been able to DL any clips and I don’t live in Canada and I still have twelve hours until it airs. takes deep breath

The first thing I said when I read 19 was “Spike is going to be pissed the fuck off when he gets home.” I really don’t care what happens in the rest of the episode. I agree, the sex is pretty unmoving. Only ME could make lesbian sex the opposite of hot. The only thing I can think of is that it is supposed to serve as a contrast to Spike and Buffy. While everybody is having mindless, loveless sex, (Except maybe Xander/Anya, I don’t know if they sitll love each other, but I don’t think they are reconciling…) Spike and Buffy are connecting on a deeper level. In the script, the Mayor/FE has a VO while they are cuddling that says “It’s all about Love”. I tihnk they cut that, but the second voice over, “I envy them” is still there, right? melty sight I have been waiting so long for this…I’ve been waiting two years for some real gentle, sweetness between the two of them!
I can tell this episode will be the one that will launch a million fanfics and ten million videos. I already have my contribution to the influx planned.
ALso, for the first time in a long, long time I was so happy to see that Buffy is always right. Usually that annoys me, but not this time. I think I’m happy she’s right because everybody thought she was wrong, on the show and the audience. But my boy believed in her…sniff

How much screen time does Caleb have this week? (I’ve been watching these last few episodes just to get my Capt. Tightpants fix.)

** gallows fodder**

3 or 4 minutes

** pepperlandgirl**

The line about envy is there. Spoken by TFE as Buffy

This show needs to be over, already. IMHO, the sex was lame and contrived, Faith has shown herself to be exactly as stupid as Buffy (Really. You didn’t think that the Bringer might have been telling you stuff for a reason?), and the Matrix-y stuff was just dumb-looking. The one highlight was the bit with Buffy being held by Spike in contrast to the pointless sex. That and the hope that Kennedy will die in the ensuing explosion.

Also, I concur with Gaspode’s analysis of the sex.

Thanks, Gaspode!

I agree with the Gaspode about the reason everybody else is doing the tube-snake boogie is simply to show the contrast between everybody else doing the tube-snake boogie and Spike and Buffy just being in each other’s arms all chaste 'n stuff. Oh, and you can’t really call it the tube-snake boogie if it’s two chicks, so anyone care to name that dance?

Thea
This might be way TMI about my imagination:

Clam-Dance?

Blah - I liked it. Not the best thing ever, but if you were expecting that you haven’t been watching the last four years. Kept me entertained anyway, and I got more of a buzz than I have done recently from Angel.

I liked this episode.

A bit lame at times, but Spike and the Mayor were awesome all the way throughout.
I think a better line from Spike in response to Buffy’s, “I don’t want to be the chosen one.” would have been a simple pause, then, “And I wish I wasn’t dead and a vampire, but here we are and we all have our crosses to bear.”

It could have been a cool moment were reinsouled Spike expresses his dislike of his current state. Instead, they weren’t for the whole, “athletic and good looking” joke.
I give it a 6.5/10. It would have been higher without that lame ending.

I mean, if there was a bomb set to go off when they open that case, why would it have a timer? Why not just explode right away? It would have been a better cliff hanger.

Meh.

So, who watched the preview? I normally don’t watch them, but I was so fed up with how nothing really happened this episode that I watched next week’s preview out of frustration and…

(Preview spoiler. duh.)
ANGEL!! YAY!! Finally! If he can’t inject some goodness and plain old ass-kicking into what’s going on, no one can. Plus, he hasn’t been around for a while, so not everyone can be nasty to him. Honestly, isn’t anyone else getting a little tired of everyone just being horrible to each other? I feel like none of the characters even like each other anymore.

Only two more new episodes. I really hope good stuff happens with Angel.
Not bad, IMO. Not great, certainly, but a click up from previous weeks.

(Still using spoiler boxes until it airs on the West Coast)

First, does everyone in Sunnydale leave their clothes on when they have sex?

The whole Buffy/Spike thing wasn’t working for me. First she’s completely withdrawn from the world, then Spike’s love and devotion pulls her out of it, into action again. Got the idea, but they didn’t seem to pull it off onscreen. And kicking the homeowner out of his house?! Just dumb writing. I guess with no one living there present Spike can just waltz in.

The Uber-Axe seems like a jazzed up Troll God hammer. Taking the one thing that can cause you harm and bringing it where your enemy can find it and use it seems like a discarded plot from a bad Bond flick. Ex-Caleb-er, anyone?

Lots of sex; interracial, lesbian, and mono-occular. And non-sexual necrophelia (he’s dead, folks). Hey kids, it’s the family hour. The Faith/Wood thing makes some sense to me, actually. Faith is looking for something to make her feel, Wood wants a connection with a Slayer, and Faith is as good as Buffy. No real chemistry there, but none needed. ED looked quite good in that scene. Kennedy/Willow, blech. No chemistry at all, waste of screen time. Anya/Xander, I think they’re going to end up together after it’s all over. He’s her Lobster.

The Mayor, lord he was a good villian. And Faith may have learned something! When the First talks to you, tell people what was said, don’t keep it a secret. Yea! I loved Wood’s line about being held by his mother in a manly way.

Andrew, not being used much, not really needed. Giles cutting the Bringer’s throat seemed completely out of character. It was too abrupt, Giles is anything but abrupt.

Timer on the bomb? Doesn’t make much sense but makes for a better cliffhanger. Since Caleb has used bombs before (the Council) this is a nice touch of consistancy.

Turns out Buffy was right, they were hiding something in the vineyard. Everyone else was wrong, and a bunch of SITs are going to get killed. Probably no comfort to anyone.
